The organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games said Tuesday that they have received 2,042 entries of designs for mascots.
The deadline for submissions of designs from the public was noon Monday.
The total number of entries received was 2,042 - 1,774 individual applications and 268 group entries.
About 25% came from people in their teens or 20s, while around 50% were from people aged 30 to 49. The oldest applicants were in their 80s, organizers said.
Following the completion of the mascot competition design phase, Tokyo 2020 mascot selection panel chairperson Ryohei Miyata commented: “I feel the weight of expectation from all those who submitted entries. I look forward to the day when we can meet the mascots of the Tokyo 2020 Games, which we believe will help raise everyone's spirits. I will make sure that we judge fairly and reflect the enthusiasm of the entrants.”
A mascot review panel will select a shortlist from the submitted design sets by the beginning of December, and schoolchildren at every elementary school across the country, including international schools, will be given the opportunity to cast their vote and select their preferred set of designs.
Organizers will select the design set which attracts the largest number of classroom votes and announce the winner in February 2018.

Wolfpack
Just make Kumamon the mascot and forgo risking controversy over some risky choice. Olympic organizers almost always mess this up.
