No word though on whether they will shift the national holidays again (which is why next week there is a 4 day weekend).

I'm sure calendar makers are scratching their heads, being that 16 month calendars which start in September will begin to be sold next month.

As much as I want to see the Olympics, neither Japan nor other countries and regions will be able to control the virus until next year. Even if they manage to largely decrease infection numbers, an event as big as the Olympics is too much of a risk for another outbreak.

I feel sad for the Japanese, as they were really hyped up for the Olympics.

With good management in place the Olympics can go ahead. In an adapted format with much reduced opening and closing ceremonies which have become decadent wastes of money and without an Olympic village, now also a complete outdated concept in a time athletes meet each other everywhere all the time.

But with “ management” in the hands of politicians, anachronistic federations, Dentsu and JTB , good luck!

this is no time for an Olympics. The tone deafness continues

Phew .. ..6000M$/120M= 50$ per living Japanese . Easy peasy lemon squeezey.

It is nothing even when you multiply it by 100 especially when you compare it with a PCR test that cost about 30.000JPY (correct me if I am wrong) per go also tax payer money OK maybe disguised as medical insurance but still our money. And while a great deal will stay in Japan the kit cost portion will go to China or Korea.

By next year July I don't think there will be a virus. The US vaccine sort of works, the Chinese already vaccinate their military with theirs, the UK vaccine seems promising. There are about 30.000 people already wiling to get infected on 1daysooner.org.

I don't think it will be difficult to vaccinate everyone in the risk group and people wanting/needed to travel by May of 2021.

I suspect the schedule will remain exactly the same as this year, everything cancelled, no Olympics.

Don't use any more taxpayers money for Olympics. Tokyo Olympics will not be held next year. Corona virus infections obstinately last a couple of years all over the world. There is no vaccine for all people, probably for a couple of years. If many athletes and visitors did not come to Japan, there would be no point of Olympics.

The 2020 Olympics are not going to happen.

Close the lid, pull the chain and get this planet cured of COVID19, then celebrate.

"the delay will cost $2 billion to $6 billion, with Japanese taxpayers picking up most of the bills."

Say goodbye to ever retiring if you plan to stay here.

“We expect additional costs to occur in the future"

Gee, what a surprise. Those brown envelopes don't fill themselves with bungs, you know.

The Olympics will run next year without a doubt

glad they have someone personifying athleticism running the show

I don't think so. Cancel the Olympics and move on to the next venue. I'm sure it will take at least a year before things possible will settle down with this virus.

The Olympics will run next year

@ James - Who really is going to show up with the continued virus?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Really Mable, really? According to most polls, most Japanese (79%) had no interest in the olympics and think they are a waste of money. The most recent poll had an increase to 85%. I don't know who you are talking to for your information.

Its going to be interesting to watch the Athletes participate in track & field events whilst wearing Bio-hazard/ hazmat suits in the scotching Japanese Summer heat.

Japan is closed to non-Japanese. Not a good look if you want people to come to the Olympics.

i doubt the Games will happen, if they do it will be smaller with some countries choosing not to take part. Just cancel it.
