as an earlier stadium plan was scrapped because of spiraling costs and unpopular design.

Please don't start passing this off as fact after the fact! It was popular enough to get selected the first time!

Trouble came up because of contractors seeing an opportunity to get more money jacked up their "estimates" forcing the organizers to redo the design and use a "Japanese" architect.

It's BS to state otherwise!

It's not finished yet, and won't be ready for the Rugby World Cup. The original design has been copied, the death of the designer has halted the court case. And yes the process of getting the OK was blatantly corrupt. It's just normal now to expect any government action to be influenced by vested interests rather then common sense or regard of the tax payers footing the bill.

The construction was more than a year behind schedule when it started in December 2016, as an earlier stadium plan was scrapped because of spiraling costs and unpopular design.

Simply not true, as the two previous posters have pointed out.

I want many athletes refuse to participate the Tokyo Olympic in 2020 for heat. Adjusting time to early morning one or two hours does not help much. On this site, heat problem is discussed a lot while I do not find the issue raised and discussed seriously in Japanese medias newspapers as well as on TV. I wonder why?

We have to install the parts without an inch of mistake

Good to know that mistakes aren't measured in metric units.

I seriously doubt the original quote mentioned inches at all. Sounds more like an American did the translation (or maybe a dictionary had the actual word he used translated as 'an inch of mistake')

This is going to be a disaster with the heat. Sooooo stupid of them to put it in peak summer so that the NPB would not suffer ratings competition. Hope they are putting heat Shields on that thing.

Weren’t there conflicts with other international events in early autumn?

Schopenhauer - From what I remember, the issue of whether Tokyo should be hosting the Olympics AT ALL was never raised and discussed in the Japanese media. Holding the Olympics in any city is controversial because of the enormous cost and disruption, let alone a year after the biggest natural disaster in Japan in a nearly a century, but I only ever heard opinions in favour of the Olympics on TV.

On on of the AM's talking heads news programs, one of the celebrities made the comment that the reason the all knowing and factual reason the Olympics were scheduled in 2020 for one of the hottest times of the year, unlike the 64' games that waited until October, was because of the NFL, NBA, College Football, and MLB World Series.

I damn near threw my coffee mug at my car's tv screen! What an arse I first thought, then, scratching my head I wondered, WTF if that's true?!?!

I hope a damn typhoon hits Tokyo during these games!
