What Covid control? 5,000 cases daily, remember?

Tokyo Paralympic success all depends on COVID control, says IPC head

Do they just realize that Covid exist before and during paralympic?

4 ( +7 / -3 )

There is very little control so success will be whatever spin the JGOV, the JOC and the IOC put on it. If they say it’s been a success then it’s been a success, regardless of the numbers of infections, hospitalisation, deaths and struggles outside of the games.

Suga and Koike will make sure all the athletes, officials even journalists are tested every day to ensure a safe paralympics

meanwhile people are dying in their homes because hospitals are full. Priorities!!

with all this and the central gov says no closing schools AND insists on holding the Para Olympics while having a SOE which consists of targeting alcohol and evening dining and which is not even being enforced. unbelievable.

Parsons seems to be just as much as a tool as Bach. Half of this article is devoted to his concern about getting people to watch the Paralympics. Japan's hospitals are near-maxed out, requiring many infected to care for themselves at home. I doubt anyone suffering from covid gives a crap about these games

one more thing- it took us over a year into the pandemic to get to 1 million. a weeks ago we passed that mark. In those few weeks since the million, the cases have risen by over a quarter of a million. in just weeks. If this trend continues we will see 2 million by September/ October and 3 million by Christmas.

Parsons said...how many people will watch the world's biggest event for athletes with disabilities, will be less important.

If Bach hears that. Mr. Parsons will be demoted so fast his head will spin.

I think the problem is that it's not unbelievable. It's entirely believable. That, and the fact that this central government will, barring something unprecedented happening (like voters actually thinking before voting, assuming they even bother to vote) be re-elected comfortably later this year. Then the citizens will complain, but go all quiet when asked if they actually voted.

True … and many not suffering from COVID also don’t give a stuff about them.

Would have been really unfortunate for the competitors but we are all making sacrifices. No one is paying big money for the TV rights to the Paralympics, no spectators. Should have been cancelled.

"They will be the people who will run this country in the future," said Parsons, who supports the idea of allowing the children into Paralympic competition venues.

Yeah, about 50-70 years from now when they become old enough to enter Japanese politics. Hahaha.

It's never been in control.

Very true. Well said.

They’ll soon regret and condemn themselves for insisting and having held such events. The sound of the ECMO machines at their hospital beds will merciless teach them what errors they’ve made.

Japanese government begs people to stay home ( but no rules) with rising record covid numbers ( despite minimal testing) with hospital covid allocated beds full and people are dying at home (18 in Tokyo since July) as cannot get in to hospital, but except for some bars and restaurants being closed early, nothing is really done. Disneyland open , cinemas open, department stores open, gyms open, shopping centers open. playgrounds and parks open . workplaces open still expecting staff to come to work, International Olympics happening, other sporting events ( with spectators) going on, , Fuji Music Festival, happening, schools opening soon after summer vacation ( in which many people travelled all over the country) followed by universities next month

And then the government expresses incredulity as to why foot traffic not reducing, and of course blames people for the new cases and not listening!

This after the Olympics has to be the stupidest things the government has/is done/doing!

No I don't think it will be a mass spreader event.

The stupid thing is the signal it sends.

The

Hey look a great big international gathering but you the peasants, remain in your homes don't even go out to eat and certainly don't have any festivals

And we know know the response by the population.

They are no longer listening.

Exactly! Not to mention the SOE or Quasi SOE which means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except asking restaurants to close early BUT as Anon said

and then they just ask the bars and restaurants to close early while still holding the para olympics. Look people are not stupid. They know the gov is running around like a chicken with its head cut off. That's why no one is listening anymore.

131 cases in the 10 days since they officially started counting. Not a great start.

Totally forgot all about this event.

Anyone know why there is a separate Paralympics event at all? It’s either discrimination or a money grab.

I think the whole debacle is corrupt and in dire need of reform. First, let’s set permanent Olympic Venues for both Summer and Winter games. Second, let’s combine the Olympics and Paralympics into one event.

In The United States, segregation was continued through the artifice of “separate, but equal.” I feel that the events can run concurrently under one banner.

Logistics.

The accommodation alone would have to be greatly increased and there are different requirements for some athletes. Add on to that there are different sports using the same venues that need to be adapted between the Olympics and Paralympics.

The gap between the two events is just a few weeks, and it's a tight schedule to get it all done in that time.

The government needs to start nationalising those private hospitals who are "unable"/unwilling to accept patients with Covid; that might change some attitudes.
