Congratulations to Ms. Yamashita, that's a great achievement.

I will take the feeling of pride and responsibility as a REFEREE would have been more fitting imo.

Just amazing!

What does this even mean?

> Yamashita will be Japan's sole refereeing representative -- man or woman -- at the World Cup.

She said she feels a responsibility to "help Japanese football improve" while also furthering the cause of women's refereeing worldwide.

Whistle blowing at the FIFA World Cup Football events is a challenging responsibility. Wishing strength and stamina to Japan's Yoshimi Yamashita, Stephanie Frappart of France, and Rwanda's Salima Mukansanga.

Hope she does a better job than that Japanese male ref who officiated in Brazil's first match at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Brazilians managed to win 3-1 against Croatia thanks to more than a few dubious decisions made by the aforementioned ref.

The day after the game Brazil's biggest daily newspaper had a photo of him from the game in which they photoshopped a yellow and green shirt over his ref's uniform.

Good luck to her though.

If she was chosen on merit..great!

But if this is just another pathetic example if virtue signaling?

She probably won't be allowed to wear shorts in Qatar.

Yoshimi Yamashita has passed the Footy referee badges.

Become a Referee.

Yoshimi Yamashita is competent, why would Yoshimi Yamashita gender be relevant, is the yellow or red card a tad heavy to raise for a women to muster?

Trust me, the fairer sex, is more lethal than the male.

“Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.”

I'm not sure that it's possible for a woman to referee a man's game to the same level as men. Women's fitness levels are generally of a lesser standard. It will be interesting to see if she can keep up with the tempo or will she be too far away to make valid judgements. Let's see her distance covered statistics. Nevertheless, whilst I'm skeptical, I do believe it's possible and I'm open to her or any other woman proving people wrong!

Let's see her distance covered statistics.

If women can run marathons (which at one point in time, people didn't believe they can), they can cover this distance

Being female is not important. The potential problem is that she and several other referees chosen have only officiated at lower levels of football. Rwanda's Salima Mukansanga for example.
