It would be very cool if they could some how include the torch bearers from this Olympics with the next. Or something along those lines.

That is what Japan and IOC SHOULD be focusing all of their efforts and attentions on; NOT trying to force an Olympic to take place in 6 months . I think that would help build morale and support.

To be a participant in the Olympics whether as an athlete, a torch bearer, etc, is still a very special thing and I don't know if I would want to be a part of a forced Olympic where not everyone is in attendance; it just wouldn't be the same. That would be like hosting a party and only your family shows up and maybe 1 friend.

Japan, IOC - I don't think people will hold it against you if you just stopped your efforts on trying to force this Olympic and focus your attention, efforts, money, etc. to the next one which hopefully will happen in 2024.

Normally the Olympics are very tightly scheduled to control costs & revenues. Currently way too many potential variables to make this a go - sorry Tokyo.

They should let the public know soon what the guidelines will be. There are already many barriers to implement- social distancing, masks, negative tests, temperature checks, keeping vulnerable people at home, etc. By July, vaccinations will be widespread. It can still be a great event, but they need to put a plan in place.

Lives more important. Olympics must be canceled.

6 months to go and the country is still in limbo? If the volunteers are on hold and has concerns if the games are going to go on, the committee is even more confused. If the games do take place it will be mass confusion it takes a lot of planning and volunteers are the main key to getting people where they need to go. If the volunteers don't know it means the committee has lost its way.

Uncertainty for Tokyo Olympic volunteers, torch bearers

If they just got their act together and said 'it's cancelled', all this uncertainty would magically disappear.

Keep their names on record, so if the games are cancelled, they can be contacted when Japan is next eligible to re-apply (2032 or after).

"That's completely different from the Olympics ethos. The Olympics are about gathering people from all over the world, holding the competitions, sharing in a cultural exchange and enjoying the festival. That's what makes it the Olympics."

She's absolutely right! We should therefore put aside all questions of safety and completely forget about the virus, and hold it out of sheer sentimentality and the desire to do so by people like this young woman. I'm sure the virus will cooperate and agree to stay away as jets ferry in people from around the world, including countries where the virus is far more widespread than Japan.

Anyway, the volunteers can still be very active... it just as to be helping people who got ripped off buying tickets to get their money back.

Wow. My parents, my brothers and their families, have all been vaccinated in Washington State. And then there is Japan. With plans to hold an Olympics in the summer.....and which hasn't vaccinated a single person yet. What a cluster---k! Japan has got to shed it's old man conservative bs government system and let younger people get involved in the decision-making process. Japan should be on a path to vaccinate most of it's population prior to the summer...which will never happen now.

80% of people do not want the Games to go ahead. That's four people for every one person this article talks to. Let's hear from them as well.

I think it's a sign you need to get out more if the Olympics have provided the only excitement you've had in your life.

What uncertainty? They are supporting that and therefore a potential life threatening danger for everyone and for themselves.

I just want to keep my volunteer hat and t-shirts

At this point the torch bearers should pass the torch at an arms' length, then the torch doused in alcohol for disinfecting at every leg.

They all want to claim, "The Olympics will go on". This may be true, and when they do everyone please remember to collect your "Go to Grave" voucher after the Olympics. I am sure the J-Gov't will blame foreigners for the major COVID19 spread that will happen after the Olympics. The Gov't will forget that they were the ones that decided to push forward in the MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

Mai Tarumi has been looking forward to volunteering at the Tokyo Olympics for years, but now she's wondering if the Games will end up being a disappointment. Disapointment, new hobby you will be Ok.

With less than six months to go, Japanese who hope to be involved as spectators, torch bearers and volunteers are confronting the prospect of the Olympics being drastically scaled back or canceled Canceled

"That's completely different from the Olympics ethos. The Olympics are about gathering people from all over the world, holding the competitions, sharing in a cultural exchange and enjoying the festival. Ethos, Ethics? Not going to happen

Tarumi, who was inspired to apply after spending time in Canada during the 2010 Go back to Canada there is no inspiration here.
