4-nation gymnastics meet in Tokyo shows how Olympics might work

Very simple really .most people don't give enough of a damn about it to the extent of " demonstrating". Just like about any other issue. The biggest demos I've seen in Japan were against N- power after 3/11 but as the J- govt just ignores demos as standard procedure most people are resigned to a shoganai attitude....as with everything here.

A handful of demonstrators outside called for the Olympics to be cancelled, but spectators shrugged them off.

This really says a lot about the actual level of public support the Olympics has in Japan. Because yes, I saw that poll that said a majority of people want the games to be scrapped next year. But that was a few months ago, and as we’re ultimately seeing, public attitudes are starting to shift somewhat. I mean, how can you explain their only being a handful of demonstrators, if the majority of the public doesn’t want the games to go on?

Though some athletes said it had been hard to move only between their hotel and the gym, U.S. gymnast Yul Muldauer said he'd just been happy to compete again.

I think this part of the article is very important keep in mind, for those who say that the Olympics should be canceled. Earlier this year, it was a lot of athletes that were calling for the game to be postponed, before it ultimately was postponed. And they have quite a lot to lose if they get Covid as well, so like I said, keep that in mind.

@goodlucktoyou. What is the point of taking your temperature when going into public buildings. It does not indicate whether you have the virus or not. It gives a false sense of security. Asymptomatic people will slip through the temp net, and those who feel hot for other reasons falsely barred. It’s stupid.

The mutated strain coming out of the Danish mink farms could set us back to square one and render all hitherto developed vaccines useless. 

This is very true. The virus has jumped to mink and then what is very worrisome back again to humans. One of the variations/mutations is very dangerous as 12 or so out of more than 200 people were found with the strain which the body's defenses and protective antibodies do not handle so well.

This would certainly put a damper on 2021 Olympics.

Unfortunately, many countries can't afford to think of the Olympic at all. It is very sad only Japan and Bach worry about the Olympic.

Temperature checks are a waste of time.

Because of our occupation, We visit hospital almost daily and sometimes 2/3 times a day.

At home, we check our temperatures everyday using a proper thermometer.

of course to enter the hospital there is a temperature check. It is done for one second with a Star Trek phaser devise. The reading is always varied. My temperature changed from 36.5 on entry, to 35.7 on exit in the matter of 10 mins.

I do recommend you test daily, but properly!

So we start to import SARS-CoV-2 by bringing people from Russia and the USA, two of the currently worst infection spreading countries on planet earth?

maybe this decision is based on the recent NHK TV program that is basically saying Japanese don’t have to worry about the virus because Japanese have a natural immunity.

I think there will be no safe vaccine for the next 2 -3 years.

I wonder how Japanese officials will deal with people from overseas who refuse to wear their masks once inside the stadium/arena for the paralympic/Olympic events?

I doubt the 2021 Olympics will happen. But it is mostly due to the Covid pandemic and to what extent every participating country has progressed towards controlling it by that time. In most other countries had they been the hosts for 2020 the idea of 2021 would be inconceivable, and in fact Japan might well be doing itself a disservice by inviting the world to come to the Olympics. This has little to nothing to do with how Japan has handled the pandemic as every country has had to work with balancing the pandemic with the economy. The 2021 Olympics won't happen unless Japan, IOC and all participating nations choose to do so.

Anyway, the olympics are not going to be held. Japan is incapable of proper leadership, so my guess is a repeat of 2020's cancellation through other countries' athletes making Japan look dumb. Again.

We will find out the result of this “experiment” in a few weeks. As a test for the Olympics it is completely useless. The athletes complained it was difficult to stay only in the hotel, but they arrived only 2/3 days before the event. Not weeks or months.

Olympics have a minimum of 50.000 directly related travellers including athletes, support staff, media, officials, federations, sponsors..

So, they think that having the audience sitting on top of each, but wearing masks is going to prevent the spread of the virus?

I feel sorry for the people who bought tickets. Only those with reduced venue numbers are eligible for refunds. There is no way I would attend a meet with crowds packed in like the photo above.

I had Covid and only had a temperature for 1 day. It makes you realise they are quite useless. I highly doubt anyone with a fever is getting out of bed, let alone going to a sporting event.

Bach said it all in his message, "you are setting an example..." AKA guinea pigs, or should I say minks, now that there's news of a mutation which could potentially render current vaccines ineffective.

It's fortunate it was being held in Japan, it has a chance of succeeding, no matter how small.

If it's in another country, there would have been much less chances, given the state at present of many countries
