Personally, I think these games should be boycotted by everyone. China is out of control.

China's oppression will only get bolder and more severe, if they are left unchecked.

When they say genocide, do they mean killings? Serious question. I'm wondering if it's tens, hundreds, thousands, or millions.

A million muslims are detained in the camps to be slaughtered as we watch. Why aren't Islamic countries making their voices heard?

I would fully support a boycott of the dictator games. Get as many allies on board as possible.

Beijing will go nuts, and that’s ok. They don’t get to free-ride on the world order while perpetuating one of the worst human rights abuses since the Holocaust. And they certainly don’t get the credibility that comes with hosting the games

17 ( +21 / -4 )

Excellent move by the US, taking the moral leadership, and more freedom-loving nations will hopefully follow suit. It is to be hoped Japan withdraws also.

Who wants to go to Beijing for a propoganda exercise, meanwhile up to 2 million innocent Muslims are languishing in concentration camps? Worst genocide since WW2.

Enough is enough. Boycott Beijing 2022, boycott Communist, genocidal China.

If announced before July, which they won’t , the Chinese will redraw from Tokyo as Japan will follow the USA in a boycottt. Actually i would expect this declaration might make China already decide to consider pulling out of Tokyo using the covid excuse of course. Japan would then pull out of Beijing in a knee jerk reaction , giving the USA the excuse they need, so called supporting an ally, and pull out of Beijing. As far as i am concerned Tokyo should be postponed to 2022 because of covid and the IOC , as its charter allows it to do, should redraw Beijings rights. However Chinese companies are among the top sponsors of the ioc and broadcasting right fees are at important levels.

Good call.

I know our athletes have been training for such an event for a long time but I’d implore them to consider this too, in light of China’s behaviour to us the last 12 months as well as their actions in the region.

There are more reasons to boycott the Beijing Olympics. The global pandemic is a reminder of that.

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Biden should crack down on the CCP for human rights abuse.

But he should also crack down on them for COVID. How he handles that will be more revealing into how tough he is willing to get with the corrupt CCP, who many in the U.S. believe have compromised many facets of U.S. education, business, and government.

Canada is all for boycotting. Let's do it!

2022 Winter Games should be just China vs North Korea.

U.S. weighs Beijing Olympics boycott with partners, allies

FANTASTIC news! Go for it!!

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Where do you get this stuff from?

To be fair that would be Mao's China, Stalin's Russia, and Pol Pot's Cambodia.

However, Xi's China is very bad.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

"No China" - Its time to bad China from many things, not just global events but also products and services. Many of societies problems from pollution, human rights, geopolitical, minimum wage; can be solved if we would just move production back to home countries. We created the monster that we have to deal with now!

Rights groups have met with the IOC and have been told the Olympic body must stay politically “neutral.”

Didn’t know that genocide is just a political issue. Let’s have fun in Beijing and have a good laugh about all these “minor” political differences. They could also provide excursions to their concentration camps during Olympics, so that participants can learn more about Chinese culture.

They have been told by the IOC that China has given “assurances” about human rights conditions.

I guess the assurances were given in cash and other benefits.

Remember the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_Summer_Olympics_boycott

4 ( +4 / -0 )

OK, let me see if I have this right. In 1980, the US led a boycott of the Moscow Olympics in protest to Soviet troops in Afghanistan. And now the US is in Afghanistan doing exactly what the Soviets were trying to do.

Check.

Ok, the US led the growth of China by sending manufacturing there so they could make more money by firing US workers and closing factories so Americans could buy cheap plastic crap and clothes/shoes, and the company owners could become billionaires. And now the US wants to boycott for what reason again? Because China is forcing people to make cheap plastic crap and clothes that US companies want?

The world has gone mad.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Moral leadership??? USA ???? Someone seriously wrote that .

3 ( +12 / -9 )

Literally a million people in concentration camps should be a line in the sand.

It will wreck the Olympics and we'll have all kinds of tit-for-tat boycotts, but that's still better than ignoring concentration camps. We are not talking simple repression here.

My impression is that the Tibetan situation has not particularly changed since the Games were awarded, so I think its a bad look to start bringing it up now. I personally don't blame China for Covid either and don't see how piling on other issues would help the Uighur case. The Uighur camps were probably known about at high levels, but only came to light a few years ago. This makes a boycott based on the discovery justifiable.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Boycott now, no point in waiting!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Nagano Prefecture has

The Spiral bobsleigh run in Iizuna is derelict. You can go in and walk up and down alongside it, and there are people there to do brush cutting, but the run itself is wrecked. It's a good place for urb-ex/haikyo style photos of rust and peeling paint.

The IOC is so corrupt that people should stop projecting a special meaning onto them that is not projected onto whatever World Championships individual sports may have. Without this magic fairy dust, the Olympics are nothing special. The mogul skier Aiko Uemura actually won the World Cup one year, which is a far greater achievement than an Olympic medal (gold included), something she never managed. The ski jumper Sara Takanashi won the World Cup four times and has more World Cup ski jump wins than anyone, but her best is an Olympic bronze.

Well written and I agree 100%!

Good.

A quick reminder though that the Olympics have taken place in Nazi Germany, the colonial and genocidal British and French empires and was scheduled to take place in imperial Japan. Ethics or humanity were never the point, even when there was less money involved. If it was otherwise, Beijing wouldn't have won the bid to begin with. And let's not forget what lengths the J government is going to hold this year's Olympics, literally at the expense of human lives.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

I reckon Japan should hold a some sort of winter games in Nagano if they pull out. Invite all the countries that boycott the CCP event. The IOC should be disbanded for their poor post covid 19 management of 2020 Tokyo game. First they had no insurance policy covering the game incase of cancelation. Forcing Japan into a corner to continue to hold the games when conditions are very dangerous to their own population. If it was not for the games parts of Japan would be in lock down right now. But this can not be done while the games are only months away. The IOC is a polictical tool use be the CCP. The CCP event should be boycotted and the IOC disbanded.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Japan can be one of hopeful candidates as Nagano and Sapporo have hosted Olympics as well as other major international sport events. No big timetable for preparations is necessary.

LOL! Great idea, Japan simply cant get enough of this Olympics circus!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

In the words of Astro: Rutro Rorge.

Xi and Putin can ban together and call it the Genocide Games.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

noriahojanen I was thinking the same but no resorts in the south have the infrastructure. Like World standard ski Jump, toboggan run and skating rink stadiums and accommodation . But Japan Nagano Prefecture has. It all could be refresh and ready in 10 months.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Practically every sport has a World Championship already. Is the Olympics needed or relevant any more. It seems to have evolved into nothing more than a money making venture , and corrupt as well.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

If the US boycotts, there goes the NBC broadcast money. That will hurt the IOC.

I feel for the athletes, especially those without professional careers in the sport. Think about the Biathlon competition. They get on the world stage every 4 yrs and that's about it. Can't remember the last time a national Biathlon competition was on TV.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

When the USA, decides to stop manufacturing & assembly of products in China and enacts a full-tilt economic boycott of China, then, sure, boycott the Olympics. Otherwise it is a meaningless and empty gesture. And, perhaps, the USA should close down Guantanamo, halt bombing other countries, such a Syria and withdraw from Afghanistan & Iraq, as a good faith gesture. Tesla, Apple and others should withdraw from doing business in and with China.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

In the words of one sporting goods maker, just do it.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

You can boycott competing and it makes little difference but boycott the buying of television rights and you send a message in the language both China and the olympic organization understands well.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The Olympics tradition has been tarnished with politics and commercialism. Time to reflect, go back to basics and original intent.

Beijing will definitely resist and try to intimidate anyone who merely implies a boycott possibility. The vast majority of people including top athletes and business partners remain very reluctant over the boycott for fear of big opportunity costs. Things would move forward with global boycott campaigning only if alternative Games outside China is suggested or seriously planned.

If contingency relocation and preparation takes time, why not pushing back a schedule by about half year and consider a host venue somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere? A half-year delay also gives Beijing a probation for reform.

Get off your high horses, people. If you have an iPhone, then you're part of the problem.

While I am in favor of standing up for human rights and democracy, I am against boycotting the Olympics. The purpose of the Olympics is to rise above politics and conflicts. They promote peace and cooperation, and should be encouraged.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Matters over money or Money over matters. Only time will tell which will decide this potential boycott

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I suggest we tell the hypocrisy crippled American political psychopaths to go away and leave the Olympics alone.

The Olympics itself is filled with hypocrisy crippled political psychopaths, so they're even

Any genocide is horrendous. I don't think two million Muslims were killed. There have been worse genocides since WW2. Look up the ethnic Germans known as Donauschwabens who were killed after WW2 by Tito in Yugoslavia and in nearby countries. They were Germans who had nothing to do with Hitler. If they weren't killed outright and their land and homes taken away, then they were shipped to labor camps in Russia where they died of disease and starvation. There were many genocides after WW2 and again, genocides are horrendous.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Better yet, cancel China, and hold the winter games in Japan too

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

I suggest we tell the hypocrisy crippled American political psychopaths to go away and leave the Olympics alone. With COVID destroying the games for everyone this go round, and America destroying the games for everyone next time, why bother? The last thing we see from America, or expect to see, is sportsmanship, fair play. or the moral stature America so blithely claims for itself. All we see are our parasites jockeying for best position to enhance their markets or mitigate their commercial incompetence by damaging a competitor. They care not at all for 'people' but lie uniformly when accusing others of behaviors which are notoriously American and do not involve any form of altruism or respect. We must ignore these idiots and do everything we can to bring Humanity closer at every opportunity. That is not in the best interests of our parasites who so easily and with hostility divide the less capacious from the more to their advantage (see: trump).

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

A smart solution is to find and arrange an alternative venue for the 2022 Winter Games. Japan can be one of hopeful candidates as Nagano and Sapporo have hosted Olympics as well as other major international sport events. No big timetable for preparations is necessary.

That would avoid crushing the hope of many qualified athletes and other attendees under the boycott threat. The "Olympics economy" would also be kept intact and run as scheduled.

The US should take a look at itself first...
