Venus Williams outlasts Date-Krumm; Doi has dream debut

Both girls are fantastic players. But one difference is that Kimiko plays with style, which not only means she hits and returns, moves on the court beautifully, but also deals with errors, losses in style, something that cannot be said about her opponent.

I am looking forward to seeing Kimiko play for some more years to come!

presto345 -- disagree completely. Yes, Date-Krumm played a wonderful match, and deserves credit for that. But to say her game is more enjoyable to watch is, IMO, ignoring the obvious. Tennis has become a power game, plain and simple. And that is what all the top ladies play -- both Williams, Shrapova, Cliesters, etc. Pure athleticism is just as impressive as "dink and dunk". And, with regards to Venus' outfit, PLEASE. Date-Krumm's outfit was hardly modest, and would have been shocking at Wimbledon just a few years ago. Venus is a designer, and, as such, is simply pushing the fashion envelope. Deal with it.

Disagree to any degree. Could not expect anything else from you. Opinions are divided - always will be. You should check your spelling though. The players won't be pleased to see how their names are printed here. And I wasn't the one who used the term modest (or not modest) commenting on the 'outfit' of designer Venus or Date's wear. Suggesting how Date's dress would have looked years ago is totally beside the point. It looked a whole lot better than the snipped and sown together pieces of cotton to conform to the designer lady's proportions, will all due respect. And trust me, advising me to deal with it is something that could bounce right back.

Date, you are my hero. You are a legend in Japanese tennis and show the spirit of a true competitor. Williams, very nice come back but lose the toga you had on, it does nothing for you except make you look like you belong on Mt Olympus. If you had a chance to catch the match, it was a spectacular display of how tennis should be played on grass. it was a treat to watch.

I predicted that Venus would eat Kimiko for breakfast, but I was mistaken. It looked like Date-Krumm did an excellent job standing her own quite well against The Williams. Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose in all competitive sports, otherwise it wouldn't be a competition. Way to go, Kimiko!

I wonder if Kimiko is now rueing her years away from the tennis circuit, having risen to no 4 in the world rankings, then leaving it at the top for marriage to try raise a family that she never had? Her husband should also take some credit encouraging her to come back to the sport, and maintain the high level.

What kind of comment is that? Seems like an excuse to me. It was a really good match though. Both competitors played well and tough. Kimiko wasn't just "lucky", but was hanging tough because of sheer determination and grit.

Well, I just hope her body holds up, because if she continues to wear those skimpy, revealing outfits she wears now in her 40's, then it could be kind of gross.

Date was lucky. For somebody like Venus Williams to come back from injuries, she played very average and had a slow start. Williams looked slow going left to right and into the net. What happened in the third set, and the tie breaker. Williams was having 117 miles an hour serving 24 aces and Date couldn't do nothing. Good placement but consistant weak return. Date is overated by far. No wonder she's not even ranked in the top 50.

presto345 -- and this response is exactly as I would expect from you. Respecfully, if you have followed Wimbledon at all for the last ten years, you would know that it has generally been the William's sisters who have been pushing the fashion envelope there. So, Date's ability to wear that dress is likely a direct result of that, so it is TOTALLY on point. Also, I read an awful lot of sour grapes in your posts. I think you are bothered by the fact that two brash, even cocky, black women from the U.S. have dominated Winbledon for the past decade with their athleticism and power and made Date's game pretty to watch, but obsolete. That is reality, and you do need to deal with it, and stop sniping at Williams because she does not dress according to what you find acceptable. My guess is that if there was a Japanese woman who played the power game, but dressed outrageously, you'd have no issues.
