It just rolls of your tongue in the most uninspiring manner. The did manage to come up with something as bad as Guardians.

Considering the word "man" is part of new moniker, I'll just shorten their name to the Washington Commies.

Haha!

What a woke joke!

So that’s the new moniker, bland, ok, but what will the logo mark look like? What does a ‘commander’ look like?

Lol, they got leaked before the official announcement - when people could see the name through the glass panels of the team's merchandise store

Washington Wokes would be so much more fitting.

Quote: “It follows the desire of team president Jason Wright and coach Ron Rivera for the new name to have a connection to the U.S. military.”

So how about US Cavalry?

Look like the CMU Chippewas

Americans love freedom, but not great on resolving discrimination. At least it's a step. No doubt many on the post will not like it but it's a necessary change.

I was hoping they'd go with the "Potomics." At least it would have made sense geographically.

Why do they even need a name ? Can't think of a US sports team name that doesn't sound like it was made up by a committee of 5 year olds.

The Washington Capitol Rioters would have been nice or maybe the Insurrectionists. The Obelisks has a nice ring to it too.

The name "Commanders" is fine, I guess. It's not particularly interesting or exciting, but it's not terrible either. Those uniforms on the other hand... woof. Uuuuugly. I hate the monotone look. The burgundy jersey needs white pants, and vice versa.

I'm also far from the kind of person to jump on the "woke" bandwagon, but I have to admit that - whether it's blatantly offensive or not - calling explicit attention to skin color is not a good angle for a sports team. It needed a change, despite the tradition.

My guess, they are neither commanders nor have they red skin. lol

How about the "January 6ers"?

Let's all forget about the indians.

Kinda lame......

4 ( +7 / -3 )

lame. no originality at all.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Pathetic...

As has already been pointed out by many others online, this name will almost certainly be colloquially shortened to "Commies". The Washington Commies... maybe that's not exactly what the team had in mind.

I will always call them the Redskins.

There were other unfortunate legacies related to the Washington football team fight song:

Contrary to an frequently repeated story, the song's original first stanza never ended with the line "Fight for old Dixie". It was however implemented during the 1950s as part of Marshall's campaign to brand his club as "The Team of the South".

From 1932 until two seasons ago, Washington had used the name Redskins — which offended Native Americans and others.

It was a dumb name and always has been. I wonder if they will change the lyrics of the famous "Hail to..." fight song.

How about Dem boys

Jesus wept.
