And how a manager of a high-profile club such as Arsenal can disregard players with experience who have won things is beyond me.

Arsenal are my home town team and I've been supporting them since I was in junior school in 1971. Whilst Miyaichi has been another valuable find, I think that Mr Wenger has finally been found out. He was handed the great defence of Adams, Dixon, Winterburn, Keown and Bould from George Graham and Bruce Rioch and Wenger has not developed another good defence since then. Whilst he may well be one of the best scouts in the world, Wenger is a pretty poor tactician and person manager.

Arsenal have the finance, the stadium, the training facilities, 10 years or so of Champions League football, the waiting list for season ticket holders, so there are no more excuses for not having won the league or the Champions League during the last 6 years. It's time for Wenger to go and for Arsenal to get a manager who wants to win some silverware. And I hope Miyaichi gets to play next season.

Wenger persisting with this youth thing...is way past its use by date. You cant beat experience.

I don't understand anyone dissing Wenger.

After the way Arsenal imploded at the end of this season? I'm a lifelong ManUTD supporter so it's understandable for me to take a crack at Wenger but even my Arsenal-supporting friends seem to have had enough of him.

Yeah sorry, should have made that clear. Players from outside the EU have to get a work permit to play in Britain. As for Miyaichi, I would like to see him play in England, but I'm almost certain he won't be a regular starter for Arsenal next year, and that will count against him. Therefore I'm not sure he will be eligible for an exemption, and most likely will be loaned out again.

Like I said, he looked really good in Holland playing for an average team, so I can see him going to better team. Maybe Ajax, FC Twente or PSV if he wants to stay in Holland.

USN - yep, that is basically it. EU players can play anywhere in the EU, so a lot of non-EU players who have a grandparent born in an EU country get dual nationality - a lot of South American players in Europe use this rule. Otherwise the club can appeal - sometimes approved but sometimes not.

I hope Miyaichi does get it. I don't understand anyone dissing Wenger. In his time Arsenal have been a major team, and have also played really good football. Miyaichi would be training, and playing at reserve level, with a seriously high quality of team-mates. Exactly the conditions to improve both his own play and the level of the Japan national side.

So basically by UK laws, a foreign footballer who wants to play in the UK has to be a member of his national team? Not doubting you but that sounds really unreasonable. What kind of odds do you think he has on the appeal?

USN - I mean the national team. So he has to have played 75% of matches for the full Japanese team in the last two years. That obviously hasn't happened, so they will appeal on the grounds that he is an exceptional talent.

In the UK a player has to have played in 75% of his nation's matches in the last two years to qualify for a work permit,

What do you mean by 'his nation'? Miyaichi has to have played 75% of his matches in Japan or the UK?

He looked the business over at Feyenoord, and to be fair to Wenger, while he hasn't won a trophy for a while, he can certainly develop young players: Fabregas, Wilshere, Clichy, Ramsey, Anelka, Vieira are ones that spring to mind. Hopefully we can soon add Miyaichi to that list.

The problem for him will be getting a work permit. In the UK a player has to have played in 75% of his nation's matches in the last two years to qualify for a work permit, so it looks like this one will be going the appeals tribunal.

Now a Japanese player in the EPL would be a welcome development. Too bad for Miyaichi that it's Arsenal. An endorsement from Monsieur Wenger may as well be a kiss of death if you ask me...
