xpompey8- I agree ! Once the event get's under way people will completely forget about the tax dollars used/wasted ! The Olys are a wonderful event that always starts slow but certainly will finish with a bang ! I'm already getting stoked for the snowboard events- Shawn White promises to reveal something new and I can't wait to see him sink or swim !

@LIBERTAS, polls smolls whatever. The majority of the people here are excited and pumped for the games. Of course there will be a vocal opposition against all the money wasted towards this 2 week event. Any taxpayer will not be happy one bit. But in terms of the spirit of the games it kinda took the city by a storm. Thousands came out for the torch relay and even more will go out to the celebrations. And a way we go!!

Locals don't appear to happy about these games: Only 50 percent of residents in British Columbia think the Olympics will be positive and 69 percent said too much money is being spent on the Games.

"The most striking thing in the poll is that as the Olympics get closer, British Columbians are less likely to see the Games as having a positive impact," said Hamish Marshall, research director for the pollster, Angus Reid. "Conventional wisdom was that as we got closer to the Olympics, people here would get more excited and more supportive." But public bailouts of Olympic projects have decisively altered the local mood.

If it would just snow....!

There's no way Japan would air such an embarrassing thing over and over. If Mao fell there would be a quick skip to commercials, and then the commentators talking about 'bad weather conditions' or a difference in rink size, or other such nonsense.

other such nonsense includes breaking news "Earthquake M1.1 - Origin 70km deep...region anywhere e.g. Iwate - No tsunami warning" !

@Smythe, not sure what you're getting at in regards to firearms and the Biathalon gold medal. That sport obviously doesn't get the exposure it deserves, but then again not many Canadians are in to biathalon. The only thing Canada wants is a gold medal in hockey.

Regarding having the ceremonies indoors, boy they sure won't regret that considering the spring-like weather that's been threatening the events at Cypress Mountain. They're forcasting rain on Friday, and lots of it. It should be an interesting ceremony with lots of surprises. Now the questions is who is going to light the cauldron?

I remember when the Winter Olympics was held in Norway & Canada was pounding its chest due to three gold medals. Only to find one was by a speed skater & the other two by a woman in the Bialthlon meaning shooting as well as cross-country skiing.

Canada Federal Govt being so much against f/arms shooting, they never raved about the three Gold Medals after said knowledge. Does tend to make us shooters shake our heads & same with some other Cdns wondering why?

"Check it out after you have seen the Mao fall on her tush replay for the 700th time."

Anyway, thanks for the link, Koriyamaboy. I'll definitely check it out.

Japanese TV will show the same 4 athletes and then show interviews with their families crying. That is about it. http://watchvancouverolympics.com is supposed to have live streaming of all events. Check it out after you have seen the Mao fall on her tush replay for the 700th time.

@okasurterdude:

You are soooo right. Group A Canada vs USA is on the 21st at 16:40 while Figure Skating Ice Dance starts at 16:15. Guess which event we will NOT see on Japanese TV.

"Canada failed to win a single gold medal while hosting the 1988 Winter Games and the 1976 Summer Games."

Boy what an Albatross hung around that nations neck. Let's hope they do better this go round.

As for Japan's tv coverage- be thankful for the internet, you should be able to find whatever you want there- live or on tape delay.

Sad to say the best sport in the Olympics--- ice hockey--- will get little air time in Japan cuz Japan wasn't good enough to qualify.

My beef with Japanese broadcasters is that they only show the same highlights endlessly. NHK should try to show every Japanese athlete not just the same 4 for three weeks.

Let's see if Japanese TV can succeed in blocking out the other country athlete's faces and flags in the opening ceremony! We already know we won't see them in competition.
