Wow, Central and South American teams are really booming this time around. You have Chile and Columbia already through, and now Costa Rica. Ecuador and Uruguay and still completely in the game, and Argentina will likely win again in their second round. You've also got Brazil, of course, and Mexico and the US are strongly representing the North of the Americas. France is going strong this time, which is nice to see after the last WC, though I prefer Germany. Shame about England.

And England is out.

Well done to Costa Rica. Italy v Uruguay could be an absolute cracker. England going home? They weren't awful, they were just not quite good enough. Let's be honest, very few outside England will be shedding tears today. They're hardly a great side to watch. Some of the younger players have been a cause for optimism.

England is done for Britannia don't rule the waves........

Big time for a rebuild, out with the old and in with the new, including the management team.

Well done Costa Rica. Very disappointed in Italy : ( There seemed to be no urgency in their game.

Italy made whopping 11 offsides. They need better timing.

Costa Rica is representing Central America. US and Mexico are representing North America. It is so rare in WC history for North, Central and South are competing in in WC.

@zichi

No. Hodgson's done a good job with the available tools. Neither loss was a route.

Give the bloke a chance.....

Give the bloke a chance.....

we did and his game winning rate is only about 50%.

@zichi

Yes, but I'd still blame the players over the manager.

And so would they, according to today's papers....

No manager can turn Scotland into Brazil, there's no magic wand.

heynong: "It is so rare in WC history for North, Central and South are competing in in WC."

Agreed, but it's going to hurt ratings, unfortunately. I know more than a few Japanese who've said, "The WC is over," despite it barely having begun, and definitely all the bandwagon fans are tired and fed up. Still, it's a pretty interesting go this time around, and might well have something to do that it's taking place where it is.

By the time of the next World Cup, the English manager and so of the players will be too old, so they must go now!

I thought Hodgson did ok. He actually played on the front foot with his formation and selections. He's still got that very English mentality of choosing cart horses like Danny 'puts a shift in and is a willing runner' Welbeck but that's his generation. Time for something new or maybe playing to our strengths by selecting Carroll and Crouch and slinging crosses in all game.

I would have to agree somewhat since Japan, England, Spain, and Italy are pretty much out of the tournament, since games from the J-League, Premiere League, Liga Espaniola, and Serie A are the four biggest leagues watched by the Japanese. Yet, since Germany is still in it, there will be a strong following since I know many Japanese who love the Bundesliga and often talk about their travels to Germany just to go to the games there. Not many people I know who follow the South American soccer leagues, and it seems like those are the only teams who will be left in this tournament. In the end, it'll probably be only Argentina vs. Brazil. But who knows, I know quite a few ladies who love the Latin 'ike'men and watch soccer games just to see close-ups of them on TV.

The Latin Americans are all doing amazingly well, but I still think France are going to sneak it....

If Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina,etc..have any say about if, FRANCE will be beaten and beaten down real good my dear lucabrasi! Not that I do not respect the French, but just look at what GHANA did to GERMANY and Germany has a stronger team than France, so me thinks not just the Latin Teams but some of the African teams will give the older, richer teams from Europe a good run for their money, kind of like what just happened between Argentina and Iran!

@Elbuda

Maybe. It's not that I like France particularly, I just have a feeling....Russia are still there too. It's not necessarily going to be an American World Cup...
