Some peeps are angry so they obviously follow you and downvote even when there’s nothing to vote :)

It just makes me smile. I never vote btw. Cheers.

Never heard of that as a non-native speaker.

I know only the version with 'balls' :)

On a forum one can agree to disagree so be my guest.

I get your point that bad passing doesn't suite with being the better side. Alright, more detailed then, the bad passing was about the inability to reach forwards like Falcao as Colombia definitely missed midfielder James Rodriquez for this. The passing among the defenders was excellent. Davinson Sanchez may become one of the best defenders of all times as he's still 22. So how they played in the back was the reason that I found them the [slightly] better side in a until the equaliser boring game. Kane committed a foul before he was tackled to get the penalty. The VAR squad probably got coffee served at that moment by a Russian waitress.

In your post you mentioned too that 'they actually played some good football.'

England became better with Rose and Vardy and Southgate did a good job with an extended penalty training for the squad as he knows how it feels to miss one on a tournament.

It was because the bad passing of the Colombians otherwise the outcome would have been different in the regular time.

Oh, the very minor, trivial detail of bad passing was the problem.

Are you familiar with the expression which starts “If your auntie had testicles...”?

Congrats, England fans. Your team deserved the win (but you know that anyway)

The team that played the best football should win and that wasn't England, several times they were completely lost. It was because the bad passing of the Colombians otherwise the outcome would have been different in the regular time.

Their defenders [often superior] and midfield lost a lot of ball possession passing forwards.

The thing I couldn't understand was that once the Colombians quit appealing every decision, being outraged at being pulled up for every foul they committed, and generally monstering the referee (which admittedly took them about 75 minutes) they actually played some good football. Why not just do that from the opening whistle?

The Colombians played to the edge but that is common in Latin-American football.

This is a World Cup where you can see the different styles and behaviour on the fields.

The real problem in this game was the weak referee.

Russia, Croatia, Sweden - fancy any team it's not unheard of that England can't beat

England already had problems with Colombia and got a penalty that wasn't one.

England has a chance against Russia and Sweden but Croatia on a good day is doubtful :)

This game was pretty dirty to watch, Colombia not being there to play football, headbutting opponents, committing bad fouls, not leaving the penalty area so Kane can take the penalty, even messing up the spot, England also making plenty of fouls and also diving all over the place.

Some would say this match was a disgrace to the sport, but I suspect not on this site since Japan didn't play in it, and that's what they really care about. I'll say England has been a pretty unimpressive team so far though, losing on purpose vs. Belgium to get an easier path and then barely scraping by Colombia in a game full of cheating where they could only score a penalty.

Hopefully Sweden will knock them out.

Belgium vs Japan was an example of how beautiful a football game can be. No major fouls. No simulation divings. But Colombia vs England was more like a rugby match.

Looks like England took cheating...errrr....diving lessons from Neymar!

Not sure if you're being brave or silly to make that comment. But perhaps it's no coincidence that England have earned more penalties than any other team so far.

In '94 Andrés Escobar was killed for his owngoal in the World Cup. There were some close calls since. In 2018, Carlos Sanchez received death threats for his mistake against Japan (and we know already that those people don't joke with this). A good article on this here:

What for us is entertainment, for them is survival... And I mean it literary, as in avoiding a betting mafia style execution.

You bring up memories of an old World Cup (was in 1994?) where one of them was murdered but I wonder whether you are over-egging the risk to their lives.

Their style of play was driven by negativity from the offset. In fact, if they had not played this way, they wouldn't have conceded the penalty. They also deserved a red card for a blatant head butt. Their style of play made victory less likely.

It was only when they decided to actually play football that they looked like they could score.

Well, the Columbians already had death threats going into the game, so it's understandable they used every page in the book to make sure they win...and still lost. What for us is entertainment, for them is survival... And I mean it literary, as in avoiding a betting mafia style execution.

Well done, England! Judging by the comments, though, it sounds like it was a pretty dirty game. PK aside, I guess I'm not sorry I missed it.

Sweden next? Don't England have a pretty poor record against them?

Not great for either actually, lots of draws. Sweden beat us in Euro 1992 in a game that still stings, although we did beat them in Euro 2012. Gonna be a tight, tough match no doubt.

Penalties aside, England were poor, didn't score in open play. Southgate got it right by losing to Belgium, because Japan would have slaughtered them.

maybe in Spanish/Portuguese the work "kick" actually means "kick in ankle and do bodily harm"...

The most boring match in this World Cup

By no means a classic but I’ve seen worse. Japan were involved in a notorious one.

You don’t tend to get many classics with England but there have been a few crackers over the years. Can’t imagine England v Sweden will be set the tournament on fire.

The most boring match in this World Cup. Not creative or enthusiastic actions from both sides. That's suck to see they ( both team players) overly complaining the referee who I thought wanted to control the game, but those useless complains made him to judge the yellow cards.

Losing a penalty shootout, especially to an Arsenal reserve goalie, would have been typical England, so maybe the tide has indeed turned. Hope the players aren't too tired after all of that because they looked very laboured in extra time.

Colombia's main tactic was gamesmanship, so they won't be missed.

There was more England diving in this game than in the Highboard competition at the Olympics

Gordon Bennett, that was a hard game to watch. An absolute nightmare, I could hardly bear to look. Still, our brave lions came through and actually won a penalty shootout at the World Cup. Astonishing. Sweden will be tough, though. England have a poor record against them.

Now, if Belgium can get rid of Brazil we can enjoy a relatively cheat-free last week of the tourno.

Yes, please. The sight of Neymar rolling around in feigned agony is not the lasting image we want of this WC. It's been great fun so far, his histrionics notwithstanding.

I think the ref has to shoulder a lot of the blame for how scrappy the game ended up being. Colombia wanted to kick England all across the pitch (though once they stopped doing that and started to play, they looked an incredibly good side!) and the ref never really seemed in control.

Not a classic, but England have struggled to grind out results in games like these previously - next game against Sweden should be a good one.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Phew, that wasn't pleasant. What a bunch those Colombians are eh? Now, if Belgium can get rid of Brazil we can enjoy a relatively cheat-free last week of the tourno.

firstly, the inability of the team to win in the knockout stage

I can remember quite a few England victories in the knockout stage.

Colombia’s style of play won’t be missed.

Sweden will be no gimme next up. They have kept 3 clean sheets in 4 games and are a tough, organised unit.

I'm not an England fan but man alive, Colombia were bad cheats. I'm glad they're out. I think Sweden will beat England though. Sweden are England's bogey team. If you look to history, Sweden have more wins. It's going to be good :) Loving this world cup!

The men in the VAR room were apparently on an extended vodka break during this match.

I couldn't watch the pks - had to switch the tele off

Football's coming home?

A long run of penalty misery on soccer's biggest stage ended

For Columbia the misery started.

This article is biased.

Colombia doesn't have a penalty misery - an one-off is not a misery make. They'll be fine

A misery is 3 decades - come back and check after several more World Cups

2 ( +4 / -2 )

What a horrible, grotesque game. Colombia was as a dirty a team I've ever seen, England couldn't aim at the goal in open play and the ref had zero control. BUT, when the chips were down, England did not crumble as usual and, heaven save us, won a penalty shootout. It's hard to explain to anyone who isn't an England fan just how much this means.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

Well done England! No reason they cant go all the way now.It goes to show why all teams should always practice penalties.

Great that the cheating, unsporting Colombians are sent home. Their entire team is a stain on the game.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Ing-er-land!

Well, their PK luck has to change sometime, lol

Harry Kane hasn't missed a penalty yet (4-0)

Russia, Croatia, Sweden - fancy any team it's not unheard of that England can't beat

It was a Long game , never the less I'm enjoying the world cup.
