Just trying to get a popularity boost from the efforts of the football team. If he is a real football fan I will be amazed.

The peanut gallery never fails to amuse. 30 seconds on the internet tells me that not only is Monsieur Macron a great footy fan but he used to play for a regional Paris team.

And he's an OM supporter:

Not sure about his policies but he's a pretty cool guy.

Lol, only Putin had an umbrella over him, what a tough guy

Even the female President of Croatia soaked in the rain sans umbrella

Macron looked like a real fan. I like him even more now.

Not even the French consider Macron a "cool guy", go to read what most of French think about him on French press, like in the comments on the newspaper Le Figaro. His popularity is collapsing

Maybe he isn't as popular as he once was but he's still cooler than any other major world leader right now, though that's not difficult. He has a certain je ne sais quoi, don't you think?

For your information, president Macron favorite's sport is soccer. Kt has beenthe case for long time. He is not the type to fake as one could imagine when passion starts to kick in.

This article is otherwise very wrongly written : Poutine was soaked too, and that is because logistics services were poor in bringing umbrellas when needed, and kissing on cheeks is standard French way to congratulate people (on forehead for sports people probably easier and cleaner lol).

Good luck to Macron. His team won the world cup for the second time in history. Reason enough to be ecstatic. Lots of concerning events in the world it is refreshing to have something so joyous happen for his country. They will soak it up for a day or two then back to harsh realities. Let them have their time of happiness, they earned it.

A a French, maybe I can give some insight:

Macron never had like all former presidents high popularity. It is just correct as for now.

Macron will benefit from France's soccer team success, because links between soccer player little towns sources and national team are obvious

Macron gave of his own pride to make this a national event (soaked, kissing, giving good messages like bringing a disabled former military fan soccer in the cloakrooms right after the final as he promised before the tournament, etc).

I think he's dancing b/c he just cut taxes on the rich.

I wouldn’t rely on comments in Le Figaro for any kind of guide to what is or isn’t cool.

A bit like getting the latest info on the grunge scene from the Daily Telegraph....

@Netgrump: indeed, I believe African people are great people, way better than the North Europeans. For example, the most barbaric tourists in Italy are from Netherlands (I can't forget how their crazy hooligans destroyed La Barcaccia of Bernini).

I don't want Italy pays TONS of Euro to the EU anymore (unlike what you say, we pay way more than we get), so we can organize better the integration of these new Italian citizens from Africa. :)

Macron popularity is collapsing, it's not my opinion, it's a fact:

And, @Kaerimashita is obviously right when he says that Macron is hoping to boost his mediocre popularity thanks to the WC, but I doubt it can be enough.

@Alfie Noakes: Not even the French consider Macron a "cool guy", go to read what most of French think about him on French press, like in the comments on the newspaper Le Figaro. His popularity is collapsing, so yeah, him wasting time on football in this moment of huge crisis in the EU won't save him by French people disapproval of his politics.

I only want Italy can leave the EU, I meant.

This is like he is wasting his time, while Italy is struggling with being forced by the EU and France in particular policy to accept 450 new migrants, besides the others over 60 we accepted already in these latest days. Just because Italy is close to Africa, it must accept everyone. Macron showed his solidarity to Italy, accepting 50 of these 450. And this is barely a news worldwide, since all the main press agencies are French or British. Every day, hundreds of new African migrants arrive to my Country, while all the other European Countries keep their burders closed. Congrats, Mr. Macron, for this WC. Enjoy your time with this important stuff. I only want Italy can let the EU.
