I was watching Sweden dismantle Mexico in the second half, but the Mexican fans were jubilant after it was announced that Korea put up that first goal on Germany. After the game the entire place was happy because both teams were advancing, would have been great to be there. This has been a crazy World Cup.
Ganbare Japan!
Big shock. It shows anything can happen in WC. Stronger teams like Germany can be beaten by weaker team. So top team Samurai Blue will be caurious not to lose to the bottom Poland team tonight. Japan wants that top place in the Group.
Go Samurai Blue!!
nostromo
this is so good - lets hope Argentina also go out in the next round and someone unexpected wins the World Cup for a change...
oldman_13
Awesome South Korea!

Great entertainment, even with a Japanese commentary.
Lots of workman-like dirge from the Germans. There was general bewilderment among English football watchers that they didn't select Leroy Sane, and I think he would have offered something different.
Korea defended really well and nearly caught out Germany several times in the second half. When finally happened with Neuer in the wrong half, it was beautiful.
Dango bong
Argentina has not won since 1986, I think you mean Brazil
Haaa Nemui
@CrazyJoe - yeah that Sweden - Mexico game was a bit rough on poor old Mexico. They seemed to lose composure completely in the second half. First half I thought both teams were playing really well.

My take: Mexico has a lot of talent. On any given day, they can beat any other team. The problem is that they are not consistent. This did not look like the same team that defeated Germany. Furthermore, the goalie for Mexico is just too short. He cannot cover the corners the way taller goalies can. When Mexico and Brazil match up in their next game, anything could happen. If the Mexican team that showed up against Sweden plays, they will probably lose. If they play the was they did against Germany, Mexico has a real shot at winning and going on to win the whole shebang. As for Korea, congratulations. As always, may the best team win, and by winning, they showed that they have talent and guts. If Mexico had defeated Sweden, Korea might have had enough points to advance to the next round. That would have been historic.
Jimizo
South Korea had good chances on the break before the late goals. Germany were poor in all three matches for the most part and can have no complaints.
A knockout stage without Germany feels strange.
Alfie Noakes
For you Fritz, the World Cup is over.
Wouldn't it be handy if there was a single word that meant deriving pleasure from another person's misfortune.
Seth M
Germany were sleeping, had no desire to win. did they not realize they would be out even if its a draw?
ClippetyClop
For you Germany, the VAR is over.
Jimizo
You’d think that after Europe tried to put its bloody past behind it and worked towards a new Europe based on peace, brotherhood and respect culminating in the EU, snide WW2 quips would be a thing of the past.
Oh, hang on. We voted out of this. Keep the war cracks coming.
That’s a beauty.
Ganbare Japan!
1glenn
How would it be historic?

@ Alfie Noakes:
Very clever Alfie. The English word epicaricacy isn't half as nice as the famous German word.
funkymofo
62 fouls in 3 games. Dirty team, glad they're out.
Wakarimasen
I said it way beck on this site. Japan for the Cup.
goldorak
Really refreshing to see sk having a crack for the whole 90 (well 99) min. Reckon a few sides would have thrown the game or at the very least not tried 'that' hard knowing Sweden were leading 2-0 then 3-0 (i.e. their wc was virtually over).
SK keeper may get a few phone calls in the next couple of days. What a game (and what a wc) he had!
Ganbare Japan!
@ Wakarimasen
Me too! The draw is starting to fall into place now for Samurai Blue. After good result from Korea, European and South American team now fear Asian teams, in particular Japan.
Dango bong
This is the difference between Asian pretender teams and the rest of the world. England and Argentina do not cheer when they are eliminated
rocketpanda
Hold your horses. First game they beat and 10 man Colombian team and drew to Senegal after the keeper gifted them a goal. If they keep getting thst kind of luck then they might go all the way.
seanwd20
England fans should hold on to their horses as well. They have scored 8 goals, but 6 of them have come from set-pieces against lower-ranked teams! If England can't score much from open play, then there is no hope of advancing farther into the tournament. Ashley young was lucky not to get sent off against Tunisia for his elbow. That might have changed the game.
Dango bong
some teams have goals of winning the tournament, others are just happy to win a game after being eliminated
Luddite
My laughter must have woken the neighbours.
Germany have been appalling, yet they seemed to believe they should advance merely by turning up. Players crying, fans in shock - did they not watch any of the other matches, or the pre-Cup friendlies? Kudos to South Korea, they went all out and got a deserved win.
smithinjapan
This seems to be a story ENTIRELY about how Germany lost, and not iota about how South Korea won. They did a fantastic job against the champs, and yes, while Germany struggled more than they have in the past, I think the SK team deserves a bit of praise for doing what they should have been doing this whole time: proving they are a good team worthy of being there. It's just a shame they started so late... but then, knowing they were out, maybe that helped them with pressure a little. They also salvaged their reputations with this.
That said, it's a mixed bag. It's hard to be happy about SK winning when that win means another top team is out, and SK's win doesn't matter for them going through themselves.
Jimizo
Yep. I don’t think there is a side in the tournament whose sane or informed fans can start shouting about having one hand on the trophy.
I’ve see mostly seen lucky, workmanlike and at best efficient rather than spectacular from the traditional big guns left in up to now.
I can’t see Croatia going all the way but I’d love to see it. Modric is a gem of a footballer in a cracking side.

Hating on England and all things English won't make whatever backwater Celtic bog you climbed out of any better...
Triring
SK is still the team with the most fouls 17 fouls with 4 being yellow in this game alone, a whopping 63 in fouls and 10 yellow cards.
Yeah a fantastic job indeed,,,, not.
ClippetyClop
We are, we really are. Apparently for you enjoying a victory translates into thinking we've already won it.
This must be all over the internet. Where can I find evidence of this injustice outside of your mind?
You realize this an article about Germany & Korea, yet as always you make it about Japan & England. Such disrespect!
funkymofo
Triring,
Yes, an uncomfortable truth. They have been the dirtiest team at the WC. Glad they're out.
Cochise
Its a mystery - germany has diversity and south korea has none, yet germany lost!
Toasted Heretic
Well done to South Korea. A charming way to exit. And to Germany and other big teams - never be complacent and rest on your laurels.
I don't think there's any need for sectarianism in the discussion, do you?
Toasted Heretic
Possibly but agree with him or not, I don't think the reply about Celtic bog was called for.
I'm enjoying the WC and the passion that goes with it but when ancient beef arises, it kind of sours it a wee bit.
And fair play to England, I wish my former host country all the best. Same goes for Japan tonight.
Dango bong
no need to hate on England now, there will be plenty chance to do that when they get humiliated later
Jimizo
Very possibly.
I’m just amazed at how England are the focus of so much attention. Even on a thread about Germany, one of the true world powerhouses of world football, people can’t stop talking about England.
Enjoy the football, knock the nastiness off, stop the childish and silly snipes and make sure you’ve got the beer and crisps in for the probable USA v Wales final.
Civitas Sine Suffragio
The irony of people from Wales, Ireland, Scotland, USA giving England team a hard time when their countries couldn't even qualify is too funny!
lucabrasi
Boris Becker, Herbert Gronmeyer, Angela Merkel, Queen Elizabeth II, can you hear me? Your boys took one hell of a beating?
Heckleberry
At times like this I wish there was a German word for schadenfreude.
lucabrasi
There’s always “epicharikaky” for those of us educated properly....
Nan Ferra
Germany did not look like a quality side in any of their matches. Losing to the woeful Koreans kind of sums it up!
smithinjapan
Harry Grotto: "Very clever Alfie. The English word epicaricacy isn't half as nice as the famous German word."
Ah, there's still "Roman Holiday". Quite a bit easier than Epicaricacy.
DaDude
Only 2 countries I care about this World Cup- Japan and the nation of Underdog.
lucabrasi
@DaDude
That’s Japan and... Japan, right?
Heckleberry
Korea conceded 1 goal from open play in their 3 group stage games. Give them some credit, that stat is hard to beat.
Toasted Heretic
Even funnier is those who resort to stereotyping and sectarianism because they can't handle criticism of their team.
People with integrity and a genuine love of the tournament manage to get by without crude comments.

Why down voting this posters opinion? Are there some issues with the hosting country of this forum? :)
Netgrump
Thinking about the German official making fun of the Swedish bench after Germany -Sweden must give the Swedes a fine feeling now with this outcome.
The Germans struggled one game too much. Too bad as I like to have seen a clash between Brazil and Germany again :)
Toasted Heretic
Indeed. Hurrah for Japan and hurrah for South Korea.
I hope Japan does well tonight.
Luddite
To all those armchair fans slagging off teams and being wet blankets and telling people not to get carried away, this quote from Danny Baker says it better than I could;
"All these people who say, "Let's not get carried away,' plainly never really go to football matches or follow a team. Getting carried away is exactly what football is there for. Week by week, game by game, heaven and hell, that's it."
Samit Basu
Japan will likely face Belgium in the knockout stage. Good luck, but Japan's run will end there.
mmwkdw
Isn't Japan's out too after loosing to Poland ?
Alexandre T. Ishii
Germany in this match was defeated by VAR and as you like no goalie goal.
melonbarmonster
What's really ironic and interesting is that what the JNT lack KNT has in spades: mental strength and ability to grind out results against all odds. This was a decimated Korean side, 2nd or 3rd string. Korea lost key players throughout the preparation friendlies and then lost the captain and critical playmaker Ki in the game against Mexico. The 3rd sub late into the game against Germany who stripped the ball of Neuer and fed it to Son for the 2nd goal plays in the Korea Challenger league. The pressure of the moment brought out some inhuman effort out of the players. Everyone is moved and thankful for the players' beheading a giant before exiting but there will be some major turmoil and calls for reform in Korean football.

Germany has sent clowns and not footballers to Russia. Shame! Shame! Shame!

Nonsense, he is 183cm and has been one of the best keepers to date. If height was everything, Lebron James would be tending the onion basket.

I swear I heard the roar from South Korea when the whistle went. Who would have believed. Last happened to Germany in 1938"
And looked what happened after, 6 years of war, led by a madman with a funny mustache. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail this time!
