Hats off to Germany, great victory!

And for any English person old enough to remember Maradona's "hand of God", the skadegladje (is there an English word?) is intense....

English people just borrow the word from the Germans. I can definitely see where the English would take pleasure in Argentina's loss.

Palacio chance was even easier though perhaps. His first touch was bad.

Congratulations to Germany! Great game and good work from both teams. Goetze's sharp-angled volley just whizzed by the goalkeeper's side like a bullet out of nowhere and decided it. It was already in OT and the players were already gassed out so good on him for digging deep. Argentina had quite a few opportunities throughout the game to score but failed to deliver. Even Messi's free kick towards the end went too high. It just wasn't meant to be. At least it's not as humiliating as the WC hosts' 7-1 defeat just a few days ago.

Some Argentinian fans really need to learn to accept defeat.

Argentina players wore the blue jersey which is similar with Italiano Azzuri. Argentina played like Italy with solid defense. They are hopeful for following Italy success as never been beaten by Germany in competitive tournament. Italy is not Argentina.

However they have not many aggressive and opportunistic strikers. Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica and Argentina are defensive teams which took minimum risks for losing the goals. In the long run, they will lose energy, sharp passing and concentration.

The longevity of German team is the mental strength and fitness. Algerian players were exhausted after playing with German for more than 90 minutes. Argentina and Algeria are identical for losing Germany in extra time. No one can beat Germany except Italy.

Burakumin:

" Argentina didn't have a single shot on target in the whole 120 minutes. "

Actually, they had a couple, but Neuer saved them easily. All in all, a good game with one very sweet goal.

That's equal with Italy and one fewer than Brazil but for overall consistency in getting to World Cup semis and finals, I'd say Germany is the best footballing country there is. Average German sides get to at least the quarters or semis and good ones get to the final or win it. They aren't too shabby in the Euros either and look a good bet for 2016.

Great for Germany, now we'll see all the bandwagon soccer 'fans' throughout the world completely forget about soccer until the next world cup (Americans, cough cough).

Every time I read an unsportman comment like this from an American citizen, what comes to my mind is "complex of inferiority". What better defense to your hurt ego than to attack somebody else's happiness?

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

For some strange reason, I thought the Argentina's game plan felt like trying to set up Lionel Messi to do a "hero" goal. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work....

4 ( +5 / -1 )

it was the best world cup ever.

Argentina didn't have a single shot on target in the whole 120 minutes. You cant win soccer games with that stat - unless it goes to penalties. The best team prevailed.

Did you watch the match or just the stats line? They had 3 clear-cut chances to score. The fact that they missed the target was precisely their problem. They choked. That being said, 2 of those chances were gifted by German mistakes. So overall, it was a pretty even match.

Kilnsmann is great both as a player and as a coach.

That's true, but he was coaching the USA, not Germany. Klinnsman is good, but lets not buy into the American media completely over-hyping him. Germany were always a good team, remember. They consistently get to the late stages of the World Cup and Euro tournaments, which is not easy by any means.

The man Boateng was the most dominant player on the park by a mile.

I would say Schweinsteiger, but I agree that Boateng contributed greatly.

glad to see that argentina's dirty tactics couldn't win this time, wasting time the whole game only to start pushing it after the goal,

LOL, what part of Argentina's play was dirty? If anything, Germany could have seen red for that studs up challenge in the first half, and I don't know how Higuain gets called for a foul when Germany's keeper completely flattened him. As for wasting time, Argentina had the best chances in the match, while Germany created almost nothing besides the goal. Germany won because their subs did better. In other words, they were a deeper squad.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Although my hearth bleeds for Lionel , Germany were the better team, better organized and working together. Kilnsmann is great both as a player and as a coach. I actually cheered for both teams, and the cruel irony was to see them face each other at the final. Well done, Germany, well done, Argentina, and Messi is still the MVP.

'God bless ESPN Sports Center highlights. Two-plus hours for a game that wound up being 1-0? Only people with no life would sit in front of a TV and watch a "sport" like that.'

I must admit it was low on commercial break excitement. Other than that, an enthralling final. Well done to Germany - the best side in the tournament. Many of this side could still be a real force in 4 years time.

@ some14some Texas A&M Aggie Goals are nice but I ejnoy watching them play, if they play well as they did today.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

from a neutral and non-soccer followers point of view that was a pretty dull advertisement for soccer. I could barely keep my eyes open as endless passes were made to nowhere and players kept falling over clutching their legs in tears.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Great result, well done to my German friends! Goetzes goal was a screamer - glad I woke up for it! A little dirty play from the Argies - but commiserations to Messi and co.

But if it had happened in the Premier League on a rainy Tuesday night

Granted, but it was a World Cup Final in Extra Time, and close to going to PKs.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

4AM was just too late to stay awake and too early to wake up. I am glad I had a normal sleep with the score being 1-0 in extra time.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Well, yes, it was a cracking goal, I admit. But if it had happened in the Premier League on a rainy Tuesday night, I bet nobody would have made a fuss....

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Seriously, was that such a good goal?

Yes. It was a superb demonstration of control. His goal goes to show the depth of the German team. Gotze was a substitute.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Nice, it could have gone either way, definitely not a one sided match.

But was it that good??

It was an above average goal, but due to the timing and importance you can say it was fantastic.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

congrats to the mannschaft and their lovely ladies

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Great job, Germany!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Seriously, was that such a good goal? I'm not knocking it for a moment, it was very sharp and well-taken.

But was it that good??

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

glad to see that argentina's dirty tactics couldn't win this time, wasting time the whole game only to start pushing it after the goal, but at the same time a little sad for messi, you can't blame him for having, with a few exceptions, a team of just average players who are not up to the challenge and a crap coach

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Wicked good goal. Congratulations Germany. cracaphat is partially right. The announcing here is atrocious. I listened with the sound off as it's always too annoying. Lots of ignorant mistakes and inane blabber. And what was with the square on the left showing the weather around Japan, during the game? That said, what a great game! It was a battle the whole way.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

@Cracaphat, people who understand Japanese, for a start, it helps, well, you know, when you live in Japan. The games have AL been carried over to another channel when on NHK 1. Simples.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

As much as it pains me, congratulations Germany.. for the 4th time, sigh. Well deserved if you look at the entire tournament, but this game itself Germany was on a number of occasions, very very lucky. Argentina certainly equal to the task, but in front of goal it was shocking. One of those goals goes in, I think it would have been Argentina's, given their strong defence.

Given the strength of the German youth and other players injured that are not at the world cup, this doesn't promise a lot for the rest of Europe in 2 years, and the rest of the world in 4 years...

What I would give for a Dutch victory.......

Jürgen Klinsmann, well done. He started the German Revolution, look at the fruit it has bourne. Congrats Germany.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

That's Goetze to be one of the best goals in the World Cup. Well done Germany, pass on your thanks to England for your fourth star, if they hadn't beaten you 5-1 in 2001, you wouldn't have revolutionize your game, thank the soccer gods they did and so YOU did. Great team with a great future. Prost!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Great job, very deserving victors in my opinion. Great team.

Congratulations Germany.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

What's with all the hate? It was a very good game. Had Messi not fallen short, it could have been epic. For all we know, they would still be playing. Imagine that.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

And I'm happy because I didn't want Argentina to win!

Nor I or anyone in Latin America, especially Brazil!

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

cracaphat The ignorance of Japanese tv stations concerning sports still remains.Couldn't believe they cut to the news just before the presentation ceremony.Thank God for the Internet. I mean who could gaman the commentary in Japanese?

The decision made by newcasting companies depend on many other variables ..........This sort of thing happens in the USA, Australia, Canada etc etc etc etc - every country - . so stop hitting on Japan. HONESTLY ! GROW UP

7 ( +14 / -7 )

All for the sake of 1-0

-22 ( +3 / -25 )

@cracaphat: Simulcast on NHK-E, as have been all games shown by NHK that have gone to extra time and has been well documented over the last month.. No need to have missed anything.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

I thought Messi would hit it.

Good game. Here's the breakdown.

My bestfriends are ecstatic about the German win. And I'm happy because I didn't want Argentina to win!

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Great work German soccer team and congrats to the goal!

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The best team won, and I couldn't be happier! Germany were great throughout the tournament, and it is only fitting that they lift the trophy. Argentina did put up a good fight though, so kudos and commiserations to them.

Congratulation Germany, you truly deserved it!

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Congrats to Germany ! . . . ad also to Argentina for a great game altogether !!!!

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Congratulations to Germany. I may say that Brazilians, and I presume the rest of the world that appreciates football, fell in love with them.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

A fantastic goal! Congratulation Germany! If only the photos here could crop Putin out of the picture...
