Most amazing to watch, and despite some ungentlemanly behaviour by Panama. Fortunately this time the ref had his eyes open and awarded penalties.

Keep it up.

England are acting like they won the World Cup after beating two Sunday league teams.

Not the greatest opposition but at least they got there.

How is your team doing?

I enjoyed that. The start was scrappy, but England played as a team and didn't rise to Panama's all in wrestling display. Lingard was great.

Not often an England fan actually enjoys watching England play, but this was good.

Kane's hat trick was not the greatest ever - 2 penalties and one he knew nothing about. But it all counts - a great first half - there have not been many games in my life where England have been in such control so early.

Holland '96 and Denmark '02 - that's about it.

Matt - enjoyed the game too though, as you said, the game went off the boil in the second half.

That could partly be explained by it being 33 degrees. I'm also a pasty Brit who is useless in hot weather!

As Luddite said, it was a joy to see England playing so well!

Any team that makes it to the World Cup isn't Sunday league. It is very disrespectful. After the previous horrendous World Cup campaign, let them enjoy their moment. The same as any team winning and going through to the last 16.

I think happy after making it through to the last 16 with a team that could go through to the last 8 or beyond and who look particularly dangerous from set pieces.

Panama are very poor. What’s going on in the concacaf group? Mexico have been excellent but the other qualifiers have been dire.

People were knocking the Asian qualifiers but Japan have been excellent, Iran very respectable and Australia and South Korea have put up creditable fighting displays against very decent sides.

Going on past disappointments I was prepared for England to lose to Panama. It was a pleasant surprise to see some serious teamplay, good football and little cringe factor. Towards the end of the game though, some of those old familiar missed passes appeared, showing cracks in their concentration.

Maybe it's OK to be an England fan, for the moment. Belgium will be the test.

Harry Kane showed he knows how to take a penalty - or two

They were clinical pens - absolutely slammed both of them home with accuracy. Hope the other players are taking note in case we end up a penalty shootout.

They certainly don’t want to take lessons from the manager on taking pens...

As an Aussie it isn't in my nature, but I applaud the English for that amazing performance in the first half! Southgate seems to be a winning selection as Manager - rather than reputation, he has gone for youth and players in form. Harry Kane will be a handful for every team they face. I was working in London during the 2002 world cup when people were so confident, and then all so devastated at crashing out. This team has got a greater potential than that or any England squad I've seen. They should be aiming for a Semi at worst.

At least the England/Belgium game will have real life now as they both struggle to qualify top of group.

I’m not so sure either wants to qualify top of the group. Both managers could even rest their key men for this.

I think the England v Belgium game will be a bit of a routine match - both sides have got to the final 16 and neither want to risk key players.

Martinez has already said he’ll make “changes” to his line up. I’d guess the likes of Hazard, De Bruyne, Mertens and Lukaku could be in for a rest.

Finishing 2nd could give a more favourable draw.

This game could be interesting. Some squad members might try a bit ‘too hard’ to make a claim for a starting place...

Leave it to the bitter Scots and Welsh to try and rain on England's parade. How did your teams go by the way, Celts?

albaleo - after the first round, the only time when two teams qualifying from the same group (e.g., England, Belgium) can meet is in the final or the third-place playoff.

Right. This could be a bit of a weird one. Of course, it's possible both teams could meet again in the competition.

@cucashopboy, I'd forgotten about the third-place playoff. I was just thinking of the final, and trying to boost the spirits of our England fans, in case the England-Belgium game is a bit of a let down. :-)

Firstly, I confess I'm not a soccer fan, though I did watch the Japan vs Colombia game.  The first half of the England game was good, entertaining even.  Buy I soon got tired of the second half.  It often seemed that some England players didn't want the ball and passed it as soon as they could, backwards mostly. This is probably a standard soccer technique, designed to tire and infuriate the other team, but it had the same effect on me.

It appeared that the Panama team had much more possession in the 2nd half, even though they are such a lower level team by comparison.  Their manager said as much.  Seemed as if England thought they'd done enough.

I'm afraid I was expecting more from our team, but this morning's Telegraph piece congratulated them because they weren't embarrassingly pathetic.  I shall lower my expectations and try to raise my hopes as well.

Still, glad we are through!
