Seems as if surgery lies somewhere down the road. If so, may as well get it done with, go through the recovery stage, then see how to adapt to the newly made arm. Otherwise he's going to have to do a lot of sitting out while the ailing arm tries to recover.

Yanks are doing well at the moment. Other players are picking up the slack. So they can afford to rest him for a bit.
