Lots of team names can/should be eliminated if the sole criteria is "causes offence to someone". The Notre Dame Fighting Irish for example. They even use a drunk leprechaun as a mascot! Oh my poor brethren from Eire, suffering lo these decades under the dread spectre of the pugilistic shamrock bearer!

It's simply a fighting leprechaun. Why do you assume he's drunk? Because he's Irish?

Same for the Vikings in the NFL- feel for the Norwegians who are so brutally stereotyped!

The word "Viking" is not a derogatory term like "redskin". Would you better understand why it would be offensive if the Vikings were actually called the Murderous Pillagers while using a Viking image as their logo?

No matter the name you choose someone somewhere will be offended. I could find plenty of offensive names if I was of a desire to do so but not right now.

Want to help Native Americans? Support the fund that helps them attend college. Volunteer on a Reservation. Pressure Local/State/Federal Govt. employees to do more for them. Learn about their culture and learn how they treated each other and how they were treated by those whole stole their lands. Learn how the various Missionaries treated the Natives (Canada too).

One real good example from out West are the Missions in California. For too long the Padres were taught to us as benevolent benefactors when in fact they treated the various Tribes as chattel slave labor. They worked, as did various schools, to strip the Natives of their identity and their culture.

I always love to recall a quote around Thanksgiving that I heard in college....Thanksgiving, America's First Welfare Line.

If Native Americans are against any of this, why do I only hear from white liberals?

Maybe because you only like to have imaginary conversations with white liberals?

The article itself quotes a Native American and notes that the move was made after discussion with Native American communities. Zero white liberals in there.

If you don't like the name, don't buy tickets to the game. I am tired of guilty white lefties getting offended on behalf of other people. If they really wanted to help native Americans, they would volunteer on reserves, work with native kids from broken homes, etc. But...that would be too difficult. It is easier (and easier to post on social media) to just be offended.

As Hans Landa said in Inglourious Basterds, "That's a bingo!"

If overly-sensitive conservatives grew a thicker skin, we wouldn't have to worry about any of this because it would be over.

I kind of think this is hilarious, because in my eyes, the ones with the thin skin are the people whining about being asked to change a name of a sports team that caricatures an entire race...

If overly-sensitive conservatives grew a thicker skin, we wouldn't have to worry about any of this because it would be over.

If Native Americans are against any of this, why do I only hear from white liberals?

There are two issues at play here. One is a problem in media coverage. Media often defaults to white voices on issues, whether intentional or not.

But the second issue-- how many Native Americans have you talked to about this issue? How many do you talk to on a regular basis at all? I think the circle of people you talk to and the types of media you choose to consume also play a huge role in why you only hear certain sides of stories.

There is a large population of people in the western world desperate for purpose. Since hard work is out of the question, they find it by making villains out of the easiest targets they can find, then they can claim the moral high ground and become the heroes in their own imagined fight against injustice without having to get dirt under their fingernails.

It respects native Americans by displaying their image as logos.
