I'm just imagining an incredibly compact mini consciousness experiencing nothing but pure euphoria every time it gets feedback that it successfully hit the ball with its paddle.

Only by a very lax definition of "learn" and "play". I guess a headline saying "cultured neurons could adapt to produce signals that caused stimulus to be constant instead of chaotic" doesn't grab a lot of attention.
For me it was more interesting the proof of concept for the "free energy principle" that allowed the experiment to be successful, if this is confirmed in other reports it means it becomes much more easier to "program" neurons and see the effect of various things.

Can't wait for them to start playing Space Invaders or Tamaguchi!

How about teaching them to kill cancer cells?

What about using a method to possibly teach those brain cells a simplified alphabet and number system to learn an idea or concept. Wouldn't that be cool.
