I hate the whole concept of self diving cars. Just another way of sucking all the pleasure out of life. For a LOT of us, driving is one of our greatest pleasures. Oh wait, I forgot, pleasure is BAD in the brave new world where people are too stupid to do anything at all for themselves.

I've got a revolutionary new idea for you, that may just allow for the world to have self-driving cars, and you to drive a human-driven car. Now, it's a bit far out there, so bear with me, but I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, you could just not buy one.
I know, it's a bit of a stretch, but something you could consider.
Daniel Neagari
In some years in the future, if you want to drive by yourself a car you may do it in some established areas and/or race tracks of sorts...
The future...dictates it is going to be automated private transport all the way.
But still, even if cars in a near or not so near future drive themselves, human stupidity is unlimited and we will find ways to cause traffic accidents.

Heh, ya can drive whenever ya want to, but at times if ya are feeling a bit sleepy, ya can turn on the auto driving

< How do you propose to drive a car with no steering wheel or pedals? >

Computer system glitches?
More things to go wrong in a world where garages charge the poor customer far too much already.

Perhaps for you. How about for people with impaired eyesight or epilepsy, who must live in a world designed around the automobile, but who can never enjoy what is such a pleasure to you? Who are you to deny them the social and employment opportunities that are taken from them because they are denied the privilege of driving, which you seem to take for granted?

I would be asking a lot of questions before driving one of these. Some examples: How does the car know when there is an obstacle? What happens if the sensor system is not working properly? What happens if a bird flies by the front of the car? What happens in bad weather? (ie. snow storm or hail storm), Can you manually override the brakes? Steering? Accelerator? etc. etc. etc.
Even if a machine is fully autonomous, people still need to be educated on how it works because there are so many unknown factors when driving, and in the end, the machine is not going to take responsibility if something goes wrong. That's why I agree with the auto industry's approach to "evolution" as opposed to the IT industry's approach to an abrupt changeover to fully autonomous.

I believe that driving for pleasure is one of the most popular outdoor recreational pursuits but I'm interested in the psychological reason of why we regard driving as a pleasure and I wonder what makes our experience of the surrounding landscape so different when we're in motion from when we stand still or walk.

Most people are already too distracted while driving.

If cars are driving with no passengers, then why is it going anywhere?

I'll give it a shot. First I'd say it's about the adventure, adding that our species have always enjoyed traveling and seeing and experiencing different things. But I don't drive for pleasure going nowhere. I always have a goal in mind, usually up to the mountain areas and camping where I get out and enjoy the rivers, mountains and insects for the weekend.

Maybe being inside of a car makes people feel "protected" and safe, as opposed to feeling "vulnerable" when walking outside. Thus, in a car, you can enjoy the scenery and feel safe.
I personally just like the speed. I hardly look at the scenery while driving.

Once automated cars become commonplace governments will demand the right to assert control over them. They will block automated cars from reaching "sensitive" areas, prevent people from travelling to anti-government demonstrations etc.

Drive a "hybrid"

Drive a "hybrid"
< That only applies if hybrid's remain available, remember the goal is to have driverless cars. >

Oh, it will be - unless they make it a law. This is driven by economics, so as long as there are people willing to buy cars that they can drive, then those cars will continue to be produced.
