Blame it on Apple as if apple is a majority share holder or apple is suppose to look for buyers.

What is happening in Japan right now is like a slow motion repeat of what happened in Thatcherite Britain a generation ago.
Japan with its insular culture,huge debt crisis,demographic time bomb,unwillingness to change is going to land much,much harder.
Thank goodness I made efforts to ensure my daughter could speak English at a higher-educational level,in spite of being told by self-entitled oyaji when I first washed upon these shores that Japanese was the language of the future,lol!

A good thing is that Japanese government decided not to save them with tax payers money. Another good thing is that there is still somebody want to buy them.
Japanese economy has changed last decades or so. Foreign investments, not exports, are a main source of income for Japanese national GDP. Japan does not have to make everything at home. Use oversea works to bring the profit back to Japan.

Failed completely or just reducing their size following the loss of Apple's contract. I imagine they have diversified, but certainly without such a major contract things will be a bit tough.

This, is , like all other Global Trade disagreement , and example where one could say, the contract winner, had an under-the-table, deal with their Local Government in order to cut costs so as to make a competitive bid.
It Governments were disallowed from supporting private ventures, just as they're supposed to be disallowed from taking religious stances, then, perhaps things would be more like a level playing field.
