if sony plays its card right, they could turn aibo into something like amazon echo or google home. the dog coud follow you around the house and you could control your home appliances by speaking to it. at its current price only affluent people could afford it, but cut the price 50% and you would def have a wider niche market for it.

Pretty sad they don't care about their older models

Sony created this market but sir Howard Stringer

prioritized the profit of American shareholders, probably

Sony would have made as much money as Walkman.

Zibo was very successfully in Japan, not sure about spec or programming differences.

Robi would make a good interface for an AI-Speaker, Robi went to the ISS new models still coming out(DeAgostini, etc).

Zibo should be Aibo.

The older ones were at least trying to be robot dogs, these look increasingly more creepy

My concern would be if Sony repeats the same decisions and drops support again in the future.

That at said I don’t see myself buying one, so my concerns are pretty irrelevant.

My memory of the original ones were that they had devoted fans, but this extended to savvy fans who hacked the firmware and got them to do new tricks. Sony reacted angrily to this, tried to shut them down, and then killed the product. There's probably a Sony side to the story too, but going after the modders certainly did not go down well with the gadget crowd.

Sony missing the mark again. With modders all they need to do is provide the specs and bus connections and the community will do the rest. Tools have only increased to make it easier.

Dog-gone ... real dogs days are numbers, soon to be replaced with a Clean, maintenance free "Robodog" that doesn't go around leaving waste all over the place, or yapping all through the day & night.

Virtual or robo-pets are not new. Check Catz or dogz games dating back to 1995.

I got two cats-they sleep all day and wake me up at 2am by jumping on my stomach.

Aibo just can't compare....
