How vague. It depends on what they are really capable of, you'd think. If Sony tells us I am sure we can all think of a use. Perhaps they could look up articles over the past 70 years of the uses robots will be put to in the future.

I doubt Sony has the 'technology' to make even a simple walker aid for the elderly. Plenty of need there, go on Sony...

As has been shown by other AI, robotics company (eg Preferred Networks), you need the data, then you need a fast data engine, then you need the two (over years) to learn and adapt. Once you get to successful adaptation then you can find applications.

I would guess that Sony has the basic movement (without feedback), no AI, no data, perhaps an immature data engine adapted from gaming, and that's about it.

Humanoid are fine as long as they don't take away or replace the human touch, for some who are lonely it could be a good idea sleeping with one

There's definitely a peak complementary existence between humanoid robots and humans. Many a times when I mount a 100ft tower, or crawl into a machine to check a PLC, I wish a humanoid robot could do this instead.

If I can think of something, why not make a more capable robot assistant? ideally a one that can make emergency calls, function as your bluetooth headset and detect accidents and threats inside the house? Oh, and install some pepper spray inside the dog's nose while they're at it for those unwanted visitors.

Depending on capability doesn't take a rocket scientist to envision useful purposes. Starting with entering a nuclear reactor or carrying out dangerous rescue operations after a disaster. At the other end the potential military applications are staggering.

How about using them to go into dangerous areas for rescue, or if the radiation doesn't zap the circuitry, how about assist in cleaning up nuclear or bio contaminated areas? If you can't think beyond cute mass consumer products you need a robot....sorry, meant reboot....

We have not yet got the tech to make human-enough robots (our expectations having been raised by TV and film - Data, Aji 3 etc), and there would be a lot of fuss over the most viable uses of non-industrial robotics: military killing machines and adult entertainment.

The konbini chains seem happy enough with avatars on screens and one solitary human to step in when it all falls over. There is an economic lesson there for those considering building humanoid robots.

Japanese companies will do anything to avoid paying a human employee a living wage. Even if it means investing billions in robots to replace humans, they'll find a way to do it.

When I hear 'humanoid robot', I think big hulking human sized and potentially scary, robot. However, I sketched this idea a few years back for a dementia patient assist robot on wheels, that rolls on its own into a charging dock. Not sure how useful it is, but...

I want AI or a robot that answers all of the e-mail enquiries to my tourism sideline.

A large proportion of them are time wasters, people who have inputted a "can you do X?" message into a text box with "WE CANNOT DO X" written above it, asking questions that are answered in several places on our website, or folks expecting huge discounts at peak periods. The service we ultimately offer genuine customers is diminished by time and energy spent dealing with such people. I bet other customer services people have the same experience.

(the reason we cannot do X is that it would cost five times what anyone would pay for it. Its equivalent of folks who don't want to pay Shinkansen fares thinking "let's hire a private jet!")

No vision, no creativity, no leadership in the final product?

BION there are robots just for that warped purpose. But like all robots, their vocabulary is limited. AI is limited. And they will never become 'smarter' than human programmers.

Leonardo da Vinci invented a mechanical robot that resembled a knight in shining armor. And before that, Arabs invented mechanical robots that 'played' musical instruments and they too were 'humanoid'. It goes back centuries, it's not really 'new'.

I can think of at least one use . . .

Would also be nice to have some of JF Sebastian type miniature toy robots(replicants) from Blade Runner. Would be cute in a restaurant. Easily kicked though.

I think that general purpose AI coupled with general purpose humanoid robots would have unlimited applications. I don’t think Sony has the AI chops. How about this - health care. Seems to be a shortage of qualified nurses that will only grow more accrue as the Japanese population is rapidly aging.
