I always wondered about this whole business of stopping Huawei getting into the US market. While I've heard them blather on about Chinese Government spying and such, I've never seen any proof of these accusations. All I've seen is the usual US anti-competitive rhetoric. Surely, if the US has proof of Huawei equipment doing such things, not to mention Xiaoumi or even Foxconn... er Apple, then it would be best to publish the details instead of doing what they are doing which makes it look like Merka is playing protectionism.

Ha! No and no. Chinese quality doesn't exist and no, they can't use their own as they use stolen technologies.

Akie, glass cannons are beautiful imitations that are seen and not heard, because they shatter quickly under real world applications Remember this in the former in the future . Qualcom is American, Samsung is Korean, Boradcom is Singapore, and Huawei is Chinese. There is also Mediatek who are Taiwanese, but they focus more on budget devices and emerging markets. You know like the ones Hauwei and Xaomis are competing with. I don't know where you got the quarter of all 5g patents number as China has a difficult issue enforcing patents and in return most of the world just doesn't acknowledge Chinese patents outside of China.

isoducky, China holds most 5g patents, more than any other countries. If you have money, you can buy more expensive equipments, like Japan, no problem. But if you are a poor country like Australia, then 10% of $billions means a lot to people. Chinese equipments at least can save you 10%, or 100%.

China has been leveraging it's ability to manufacture for years. But that is the crux of their problem. China manufactures, until very recently (like 5 or so years ago) it didn't research, develop, or apply it's own technologies. Now that it (China) is begining to do so, it is finding itself in direct competition with the USA and the current trade war is the result. This is going to get more interesting next year as I see more manufacturing being dispersed outside China and more Chinese firms looking to buy established brands or set up western looking indie brands.

So, by detaining Chinese executives the US gains a business advantage?

Seems unfair to me.

Also, in my dealings with Chinese suppliers from supplements to sunglasses I have had nothing but good products and service for very decent prices!

OnTheTrail, be careful what you wish and what you do. If you treat China as sum-zero game, then you will get zero sum. China is big enough for itself. China can make things more efficient, more cost effective, better quality. You can definitely use your own equipments, China can use its own. However, you can't embargo China anymore, all you can do is to embargo yourself.

Nice to see China is no longer going to get a pass in hoping that with prosperity their authoritarian government will change to a democracy. Tried it, didn't work. Time for China to be treated as what they are, a Mercantile -zero- sum-game country that will take and abuse any advantage that is left open to it. At all costs.
