I read that this plant will not be producing the most advanced chips, only 2nd tier.

One reason for building the factory in Japan is because the US can force TSMC to handover company Information by the Defensive Production Act. Multiple media have reported that the US held a semiconductor summit to force TSMC, Samsung, and other companies to hand over confidential data.

That is a story coming from a Chinese propaganda outlet EqualOcean.com. Please be more discriminating before believing every fabrication coming out of Beijing. Western firms have long complained that the Chinese strong arm them into releasing their proprietary data as the price of doing business in China. That is well documented. In this instance the Chinese are making up this story to make the US look like them. It is not true.

Sony has a semiconductor fab plant in Nagasaki.

Would be nice if Sony was known for more than Playstation outside of Japan.

Sony, the one and only.

@Hello Kitty 321

Because Taiwan has a monopoly in this business, no other countries come close, certainly not the USA

Good news!

Japan used to be a major producer of chips until 1986 when the American semiconductor industry complained that it faced unfair competition from Japanese firms. The U.S. forced Japan to sign theU.S.-Japan Semiconductor Agreement which in turn led to a drop in production. It is ironic that it will now be home to a Taiwanese factory.

Sony has a semiconductor fab plant in Nagasaki. Great location, just off the Nagasaki Expressway, less than 2 hours to Fukuoka airport and Hakata port, even closer to Nagasaki port, well educated workforce, great lifestyle for workers who can own their own house.

Kumamoto is a great location. Plenty of greenfield locations near the port, shinkansen, airport and highway.

One sad thing about this is all the woods and farmland they are currently flattening in preparation of the new fab. It used to be a lovely part of my drive each day.

Japan's the worst place to manufacture semiconductors from with its frequent earthquakes. But I guess the money thrown by Jgov is irresistible.

There is hardly any country bordering the Pacific Ocean that doesn't experience large earthquakes. Taiwan, China, Philippines, Indonesia, PNG, Russia, the US, Mexico, Chile, Peru, etc., all have long histories of major earthquakes. Believe it or not you can build buildings to survive earthquakes.
