So you can still bring lots of clips, wipe out the local Walmart, and suicide with your own gun.
Smart? Not much.

How about we don't use gun at all?

I'm so glad that hand guns are outlawed here in Japan (except for police and military). There are other things to worry about (knives, being pushed in front of a train), but at least I don't have to worry about getting shot.
Ken Holcomb
Smart phones have already proven they don't make their owners any smarter.

This a high risk product. Apart from dumping yourself into the middle of America's crazy gun politics, it is inevitable that things will go wrong. Tech never works 100%, especially ID tech. When this doesn't work (or works too slowly), people won't be locked out of a car or unable to open their locker - there will be dead bodies. Then there will be court cases, fines and criminal liabilities.
Introduce tech into something and the bar is automatically set really high. There are loads of RTA deaths on America's roads every day, but if just one happened involving a Tesla EV it would make the international news and there would be a massive fuss. Someone does something bad and due process kicks in. Someone does something bad on the net and governments call for companies to be shut down, censored or restricted. There is no level playing field when you introduce tech into the mix.

If guns were to ever truly become "smart," most would self-destruct.

In the past, the American gun lobby has been able to quickly kill all attempts to increase gun safety.

Some form of this technology should be used on military firearms and other hand carried weapons to prevent an enemy from using weapons lost or abandoned during combat. A standard tactic of guerilla forces has long been to steal weapons from the army and police of the nation government they seek to overthrow including taking weapons from soldiers they killed. Likewise this is how they often source their ammunition. Che Guevara explains how in his book "Guerilla Warfare". This kind of tech would prevent revolutionaries or terrorists from using weapons taken from legitimate police and military forces as they often do now.

Anything to make it harder for the US to prevent gun sales to the drug cartels and allied street gangs. Right? None of this 2nd Amendment noise is really about protecting the right of Americans to own guns. It's about protecting gun sales to all and sundry including criminal gangs. It's all about money.

Something like this might have prevented a few terrible school shootings.

This tech is one step in the right direction, but I don't think it can be used to stop most/all of the gun problems in the USA. I think it will be the most useful for families with children, so the kids can't accidentally shoot it if they find it. However, I doubt this will be very useful for suicidal people- generally speaking they need therapy and psychological help more than tech can help them. As always, there needs to be better and stricter registration, licensing, legislation, and safety procedures in the USA about guns.
I like how in Japan the police come to the houses to check how people are keeping them, and to own a gun here is rather complicated. If they did a similar thing in the USA, that could really help. Not to mention a mental health check up before purchasing a gun, but I know I am dreaming here lol.

So whoever has control is the winner? Hmmmm ...

Speak for yourself, some of us are gun aficionados.

@Ian
The Lawgiver was designed to explode if anyone other than the owner tried to use it. That's not on the features list. Yet.

If the gun can run an IQ test on the owner 99.99% of our problems would be solved.
ian
Seriously though this will only hamstring the legal and responsible users. For responisble owners current safety features and practices are probably more that enough.
For illegal and irresponsible users, there won't be enough ever.
starpunk
Just what we need, a new type of gun that'll be so easy for any immature troublemaker to get. Wayne LaPierre is probably giggling like a kid over this, Now he can shoot his mouth off with his lies some more.
Sven Asai
Makes not so much sense and it’s still insecure as before. In doubt they take your gun and your hand from you, that’s already two of those three securing ‘ideas’. Yes, in better cases you still have another hand left to defend your smartphone or finally your tongue to tell them the unlocking code. lol
englisc aspyrgend
Any tech can be hacked or circumvented, this is a meaningless product, a placebo to pander to the gun lobby. The only answer is gun control, but we all know that will never happen in our lifetimes in the USA. “Laissez les Bon’s temps d’abattage rouler”.
bass4funk
Ted Bunny had a very high IQ and never used a gun so I have no idea what that statement was supposed to convey, that would be a failed solution.
No, he’s probably giggling that the lefts attempt to crush guns is a waste of time.
Lies? I think you need to look to the left when it comes to lies about firearms in General. Take O’Rourke for example, he actually thinks in that head of his that he will be the next governor of Texas…..Texas and he is running on a campaign of wanting to take our firearms away. He just sank his campaign before it even got started. What a moron.
Iron Lad
More control, as usual.
As Karl Marx said
More attempts to disarm and demoralize the workers, nothing more.
bass4funk
I don’t think so
I am not sure what that really meant, but as far as restricting guns it depends, if many of these blue states would implement the laws that are already on the books the gun homicide rate would be cut in half.
Desert Tortoise
Yes, yes, yes, and I am positive all the idiots firing guns into the air at midnight on News Years Eve consider themselves to be "responsible gun owners". To the extent that notionally responsible gun owners reject all attempts to regulate firearm sales to those who should not have them, such as Congress requiring the ATF data base not be a searchable data base and objecting to large capacity magazines, firearm registration and mandatory background checks or features like this in the article these, cough cough "responsible" gun owners are indeed responsible; responsible for the ridiculous gun violence prevalent in the US.
bass4funk
I was talk about the black community that suffer the most through gun violence specifically. No leader is willing to enforce any of the laws that are on the books already and so cities like Chicago, Oakland or New York will continue to see more blacks die and no, the leaders would rather talk about the guns themselves than talk about the real political and social problems.
https://www.everytown.org/issues/gun-violence-black-americans/
Each day on average, 26 Black Americans are killed by guns and 104 experience non-fatal injuries. At least every other day, a Black person is shot and killed by police. These trends worsen in large cities, where Black Americans make up 68% of homicide victims.
Not true.
3 of the safest cities have populations over 100,000: Allen, Frisco, and McKinney, making their low crime rates even more impressive.
32% (16) of the cities reported fewer than 100 total property crimes, and only 3 cities reported more than 1,000 property crimes (Allen, Frisco, and McKinney).
The safest cities in Texas average 0.7 violent crime incidents and 8.0 property crime incidents per 1,000 people (81% and 62% below national averages, respectively).
Now, that is not to say that gun violence doesn’t exist, but for its size the black communities are suffering the most and instead of these leaders imposing the laws already on the books they go after the guns which will never, ever work. The Democrats think that strategy will work, hasn’t worked and won’t work for them, don’t believe me, ask O’Rourke.

From CDC statistics, deaths by firearm per 100,000 population, year 2019 (most recent data available)
Massachusetts: 3.4 (lowest in nation)
New York: 3.9 (2nd lowest)
New Jeersey: 4.1
Hawaii: 4.4
Connecticut: 5.3
Calforina: 7.2
Texas: 12.7
Florida: 12.7
Arizona: 15.1
Alabama: 22.2
Wyoming: 22.3
Oh my, those nasty liberal states with their gun control laws seem to have lower numbers of deaths by firearm in proportion to their populations than the open carry states. Could it be the NRA propaganda is a lie? Say it ain't sooooooo ......
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/firearm_mortality/firearm.htm
Make sure you set the data filter to 2019, the most recent year for data.
Desert Tortoise
Forgot to add Rhode Island at 4.6 firearm deaths per 100,000 population, putting them at number 6 with California at number 7.
FizzBit
Now compare the cities and let’s see if you can write that same sentence above.
Desert Tortoise
The link below shows the twelve cities in the US that broke their all time gun violence records in 2020. Of the twelve, only one is in one of the seven states shown above with the lowest numbers of deaths by firearm per 100,000 residents. That city is Rochester NY. All the other cities recording record numbers of gun deaths are in states with higher rates of death by firearms. LA's rate is about 8.9 per 100,000, higher than 2019 or 2020 by about 30% but still well below the rate for the US as a whole.
