Amazon drops New York headquarters plan amid protests

The New York plan had been endorsed by Mayor Bill De Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo, but ran into fierce opposition from some local politicians and community activists, including newly elected Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose district borders the New York site.

This must be a socialist's vision for the future. "No jobs" is better than "more jobs". Does Ocasio-Cortez think that the jobless will be able to pay for her new socialist agenda?

this Ocasio-Cortez has the potential to be America’s Maduro, she advocates for the same train on thought that has plagued Latin America: bolivarian economics (as seen in Cuba/Venezuela/Bolívia), Che-Guevara’s societal doctrination, where everyone loses but her and her partners. NY losing 25,000 jobs because of a small group of Democrats, wake up America!!!

@laguna, last I heard, Foxconn will be making less investment in WI than originally planned due to slowdown of its business. I heard that these incentives aren’t all up front, and there are annual filings to “prove” you invested / locally hired the number of people you originally said.

Reminds me a bit of the decades-long standoff between the NFL and LA. It was the former that crumbled. Neither LA nor NY need to offer subsidies to attract business.

Yeah, typical "liberal and progressive" company, who won't even consider building a place unless they get unfair tax breaks and incentives and run away at the slightest resistance. There was barely any benefit for NY out of the deal other than bragging rights, but if Jeff Bezos is such a lover of progressive reform you'd think he'd be more than happy for Amazon to pay their fair share! I hate those hypocritical CEOs who've sadly fooled many people.

Any tax break given to the new company must be paid by the local taxpayers.

And payroll taxes for 25K knowledge workers are $0? These weren't warehouse jobs. Getting out of NYC area and the high taxes there seems like a win for Amazon.

N. Va and Nashville will happily accept the extra workers.

Cities are in competition, just like companies and workers are. NYC just lost .... or won, depending on your perspective.

Hope they are happy, since other large companies will look at this treatment when they decide where to expand.

I am not sure of how it could be implemented but it should be illegal to offer tax breaks and other incentives to one company unless it is also available to all other companies, It is not fair to the many companies which have been a part of the local community and contributed to the local economy for years when another company can move in and receive special treatment. It is also not fair to the local taxpayers. Any tax break given to the new company must be paid by the local taxpayers.

I’m not a Bezos fan but it’s good to see him stick it to New York Democrats and their anti-business attitude.
