Yet when someone points out that android should be at more than 50% of the market when 35 companies use android in their phones its suddenly irrelevant.

You make absolutely no sense. It's like saying europe should have many times higher GDP than the US simply because there are more countries. Market share NEVER has anything to do with the number of companies involved, it has to do with how good the product is and how well marketed it is. And Android is just many times better, since the marketing is pretty much zero (apple probably spends more than all 35 android brands together, and wp8 on top).

If you think cheaper is the case, I think you're mistaken.

It is a cheaper case. The iPhone 5 is aluminum.

All I'm noticing right now from iPhone users isn't that it's labelled as the best option. Nor are they even happy with their phone anymore.

So I guess that's why DoCoMo lost 40,000 customers last month and AU and SoftBank gained combined 550,000 or so. So much so that DoCoMo are considering selling the iPhone 5.

Basroil,

Just a couple of points for you, android phone comprise numerous actual manufacturers and isn't one single brand. As the article clearly states yet IOS is one single company so in effect your saying numerous companies (35 in total) combined are outselling a single company. Kinda like saying GM, Ford, Honda, Nissan combined sell more cars than Toyota. Kind of a captain obvious there isn't it?

Oh by the way where is your beloved microcrash in the list?

Also maybe android is so cheap because of the number of manufacturers using the OS! But quality bets quantity remember and apple is quality

It's pretty simple.

Android > iOS Samsung > Apple

Done. What is there to argue about?

When locking yourself down to 1 OS, that's only available on 1 set of hardware, you aren't going to hold a commanding lead of the market for long. Not without having service, features, etc that are simply better than the competition.

With mp3 players, they held that market simply cause majority of accessories were built for the iPod and their own music services, including other companies' services worked with it.

With phones, this isn't so. There isn't anything compelling enough with the iPhone to keep users tied to it. The same can be said with tablets. It's nothing new that Apple's dominance didn't hold and is slipping every quarter. Be it sales or iOS penetration.

Open source platform makes a world of difference...more likelihood of experimentation in App development.

Apple always sold to the premium market. That's all they sell. Can't expect a premium product to dominate the world marketplace. That just goes against economics. So that limits iOS adoption, especially in poorer countries which make up most of the world's population.

Apple sells partially to the premium market. You can't tell me an iPod Shuffle or Mac Mini was meant for the premium market. Even the Apple TV is comparable in cost to other media boxes, although a little lacking in features.

More popular doesn't mean the best. It means the cheaper in this case. But this is a doubtful statement: if it's popular because it's cheaper, it means that people will opt for Android because they can't afford the other option. Not because it's the best. So Apple has a win-win situation here: it sells to less people for a higher price, and still is perceived as the best option. Is not that every company's dream?

@LostinNagoya

If you think cheaper is the case, I think you're mistaken. The Galaxy S3 is hardly cheaper. When I bought my LG G2x phone, it cost me $550 and only has 8 GB of storage. The iPhone 4S was $650 unlocked on release, but take off 8 GB of storage and it'd probably have been comparable in cost to the LG G2x.

If you went with the contract for either phone, it would have been $200 (16 gig iPhone 4S model and the 8 gig LG G2x model - with $50 mail-in rebate).

All I'm noticing right now from iPhone users isn't that it's labelled as the best option. Nor are they even happy with their phone anymore. With each new OS upgrade, their phone turns closer and closer to being nothing more than a brick. I think biggest complaint is how terrible the camera is. That's to be expected, as the camera is terrible and has been since the first iPhone.

@2020hindsights

I don't see how Apple is leading, when Samsung simply sells more smarphones. For a single phone...have no idea. For overall, Samsung probably leads by a decent margin. Either way, there isn't even any numbers out. Just what each company is expecting to sell. Apple expects to sell over 40 million iPhones. Samsung expects to sell over 60 million smartphones.

The only thing that made the news isn't how many millions more Samsung sells than Apple. Which they've been doing consistently quarter after quarter. What made the news was that Samsung's top model smartphone beat Apple's top model smartphone for a quarter.

Maybe they should change the news. The latest headlines could be "Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 2012, Samsung beats Apple in smartphone sales"

As you know this simply isn't true. If you go for total numbers as well, except for Q3 Apple sells more than Samsung. That's why it became news when Samsung outsold Apple in Q3. Q4 will reverse this.

Basroil,

So how exactly is it irrelevant. Not that long ago (only a mere couple of hours) you where sprouting off saying how android has constantly been at 50% of the market. Yet when someone points out that android should be at more than 50% of the market when 35 companies use android in their phones its suddenly irrelevant. Gee you really do hate to be corrected now don't you.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Basroil,

You seem a bit confused there in regards to market share, but then again that is understandable. Or is it just you don't like to be corrected.

Android rightly has a larger market share than iOS due to the fact that android OS is used by 35 phone manufacturers whereas iOS is used by one. You cannot even compare the two for that reason alone. The 35 manufacturers who use android make over one hundred different phone with the system yet apple make a couple so the comparison and your comment about fruit juice splattering everywhere and android being over 50% market share is totally irrelevant and just another rant on your behalf. If you had any real understanding of market share you would realize that. But based on your other business comments recently l dont think your grasp on the matter is that strong anyway.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Outta here: just making a correction to your last post. Android is not present in 100 different phones, it's present in more than 350. So your argument is the right one.

Samsung alone holds 24% of the quarter sales, compared to Apple's 17.8%. So while there are plenty of other companies (of which only a dozen have any reasonable sales), it's irrelevant.

Q3 only. And it makes the news. Yet every other quarter Apple leads (including this Q4 by a large percentage). Unfortunately that is situation normal so no news.

Open source platform makes a world of difference...more likelihood of experimentation in App development.

How so...?

Oh really.

Seems Samsung moved ahead of Apple in Q1.

http://bgr.com/2012/07/26/samsung-q2-2012-smartphone-sales/

Seems Samsung continued moving forward, well past Apple in Q2.

We all know what happened in Q3.

It is a cheaper case. The iPhone 5 is aluminum.

Think you need to read what I was replying to. We weren't talking about the actual phone shell.

Also the price of plastic can be more than the price of aluminium. All depends on the type of plastic. Aluminium is about $1 a pound. Plastic can be anywhere from $0.50 to $200+ per pound. Course, it's more likely that a smartphone is just going to sport your cheap $0.50 plastic.

Looks like fruit-juice is stating to splatter everywhere.

It's now been half a year that Android has consistently been at the 50%+ mark, and it sure as hell isn't going to drop anytime soon. Especially true of emerging markets where android phones can be had for $300 before discounts, and iOS things don't come down from $600

Apple’s iOS will remain the clear number two platform but will be “cost prohibitive for some users within many emerging markets,” IDC said.

Doubt it. iPhone 5 will be a stellar success in China. It is well on it's way to be the top selling smartphone in Q4 (move over Samsung Galaxy III).
