As I always say iPads are way too overpriced and the consumers are voting with their wallets!!

Why do Stormtroopers use iPhones? ...
Because they couldn't find the Androids they were looking for.

I wish there were real competition and a viable alternative to both ios AND google.

In another year for my next computer I think I'll go for a Surface Pro version. I can put linux on it and also have windows, as full operating systems. Android is good for phones and small powered devices and given the worldwide desire has every indication of supplanting Apple's closed clunky development. I see Microsoft as a bit player but having a niche. Overall the hardware continues to improve in small form factors and that will lead to more mobile computing.

There's only one Android tablet I'd get--the Google Nexus 7. Mostly because being a pure Google device, it means easy upgrades to the latest version of Android itself. I hope that we see more tablets done this way, especially with the Android Silver certification program coming this fall as part of the release of the next major version of Android (currently called Android L).

I recommend Dell Venue 8 Pro. It's a great machine and runs everything you throw at it

Not a fan of the MS Surface?

I'm an IOS guy, but the Kindle Fire looks pretty good to me as an alternative.

+1 for the Nexus 7 comment. Beautiful device with an amazing screen resolution and great performance. The fact that it's priced so ridiculously low for what it is and what it is capable of is a bonus.

+1 for the Nexus 7. Love mine and no damage after cat knocked it off the table a few times.

+1 for Nexus 7 or whatever successor Google will announce this year.

Another Nexus 7 vote here. I don't use it all the time, but when I do, it's just right.

The trick of infusing competition into the system died with the first anti-monopoly laws. They could not do it then; they can't do it now. Linux would be a great alternative to both; but it would have to make major changes and have a standard core for it to be on the same level as the Android and Apple. Some one, Steve Jobs reincarnation, needs to shake Linux and get it up to par with the big boys (and girls) to be a true alternative.
