Guess you have no idea of the mind boggling sales and marketing jargon used to describe technology

"wireless charging" is hardly 'marketing jargon'. The phone uses no wires, and gets charged. Calling that jargon is silly.

Trying to say it must be called 'contact pad charging' on the other hand - well that surely sounds like marketing jargon.

And let's remember, you came into this thread, talked about 'wireless charging', and when everyone pointed out that apple already has this on all their phones, you tried to introduce some new terminology, and get on your high horse that everyone wasn't using this non-standard terminology you brought into the thread.

Mate, contact pad charging is not a thing. It doesn't exist. Nobody advertises their phone as supporting 'contact pad charging'. That's just a diversion. Admit it: all current Apple iPhones have wireless charging.

Well that (contact pad charging) is what exists today, It is though marketed as wireless charging.

So you admit that all current Apple iPhones have wireless charging? Good.

Wireless charging where you can charge from a distance, like 10-15 feet away, does not exist.

That's right. It doesn't exist. So why are you talking about it like it's a thing? Crazy.

As for chip design, you don't seem to know much..so let's leave it there.

Diversion. Actually I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, have programmed FPGAs and build electronic devices as a hobby. I'm gonna bet I know more about chip design than you.

And that is the reason (Windows OS on the tablet) why Surface is so successful, so in your world Windows OS on a tablet makes it a laptop..great.

Glad you agree with me on that one.

Regardless of what the sales and marketing teams push, iPhones and others are using official wireless standards when they charge using the contact pad. That isn't spin.

Well, I can only advise you to go thru the WPC Qi and PMA contact charging standards.

Guess you have no idea of the mind boggling sales and marketing jargon used to describe technology, the marketing folks see that no wire is attached to the phone for charging, and viola now that's wireless charging. and that's how it is marketed, and this is not something unique to Apple, the sales and marketing twist the technical terms anyway they want to suite there branding etc..

From the Apple site itself:

Your iPhone 8 or later features integrated **wireless charging** that allows for an easy and intuitive charging experience.

Very obvious that you cannot see beyond the marketing and sales jargon, now that is something very common to die hard fans of a product.

As for chip design, you don't seem to know much..so let's leave it there.

They didn't make the first mp3 player, nor the first smartphone, nor the first tablet. It's just when they entered those markets, they made the game-changer product in each of those categories.

Yes, game changing design and packaging and not core technology is there forte, design and packaging is what the end consumer see's and that is what they buy, and that's where (design and packaging) they were leading, but the competition has caught up and is now ahead..

But the key difference is that Surfaces don't have a mobile OS. They run regular Windows. That's why they are laptops

And that is the reason (Windows OS on the tablet) why Surface is so successful, so in your world Windows OS on a tablet makes it a laptop..great.

I have a Galaxy Note 8,(yeah it was expesive too 12万) but its an actual tool, I use the pen to translate text(if the font isnt crazy it works on games too), make gifs , instant note-taking , a lot of screenshot options ,Split screen, an SD card, can project my phone to a tv wirelessly, customization, widgets.

Take a screenshot and translate text using a finger. Make gifs (yes, believe it or not, you can). Document scanning, instant notes, project the screen to a TV... All of those are easy with the iPhone. Limited customization that's true, and no SD card, that's true too but I've never needed to fill up the phone with more than a couple of GB in a day so it's no issue to drop the files to external storage if needed. Seriously, there is very little advantage to one over the other.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Apple makes great quality phones, but they really cant DO antyhing. What are the features that warrent the price? (This is an actual question)

A few things I can say I'm jealous about with apple:

Updates are across the board

They release sooner, (I'll have to wait a while to even check out the Note 10)

They have a TON of accessories.

I'd really like to see what the dual camera recording is like on the 11.
-2 ( +0 / -2 )

People have always complained that Apples stuff is so expensive, and they are right, they are. But you must remember that they also have the best resale value! so things even out a little. So for once Apple actually lowered the price of a new phone! and dispite tarrifs didn't raise the top phone prices! This is great. We all know people (everyone not just Apple users) are holding on to their phones longer.

Well I can definitely see that you have a difficult time understanding the difference between wireless and contact pad charging.

Mate, contact pad charging is not a thing. It doesn't exist. Nobody advertises their phone as supporting 'contact pad charging'. That's just a diversion. Admit it: all current Apple iPhones have wireless charging.

Apple rarely lead. They wait and do it best.

Well they were initially leading, and they are definitely not the best, those days are long gone

Nope, they were never leading. They didn't make the first mp3 player, nor the first smartphone, nor the first tablet. It's just when they entered those markets, they made the game-changer product in each of those categories.

The design of the A13 is what makes it amazing. Any foundry can manufacture a chip. Not any company can design the fastest CPU and GPU in a phone..

Well you should start with chip design for manufacturing (DFM) concepts, further the ARM chip designers were hired by apple, chip design is again not something invented by or unique to Apple.

ARM Holdings was a joint venture between Apple, Acorn computers and VLSI Technology. And these days ARM licenses their designs. But Apple create their own designs to keep ahead of the competition. And they are doing a food job of it.

https://apple.slashdot.org/story/19/06/26/2133236/apple-hires-key-chip-designer-from-arm-as-own-efforts-ramp-up

Good move, wouldn't you say. A good addition to an amazing cpu design team.

Like I said. The Surface just a laptop with a touch screen. And they sell in way lower numbers than iPads.

Well it's the other way around, Its a tablet with a functionality of a laptop

OK, change the word order. It's still the same. But the key difference is that Surfaces don't have a mobile OS. They run regular Windows. That's why they are laptops.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Wait, so this is a technology that doesn't even exist yet, and someone was trying to say Apple has done something wrong by not having it on all of their phones yet?

Pretty much.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Oh, it was the same guy:

There are so many phones out there with similar cameras and lesser cost, now where is wireless charging, where is the foldable phone, where is any new breakthrough technology, nothing right.

He's criticizing Apple for not having a foldable phone (which, neither does anyone else), nor wireless charging (which, neither does anyone else).

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Nobody, not just Apple, has been able to make it work effectively enough to use at this time.

Wait, so this is a technology that doesn't even exist yet, and someone was trying to say Apple has done something wrong by not having it on all of their phones yet?

Um.....

2 ( +2 / -0 )

From the Apple site itself:

*Your iPhone 8 or later features integrated wireless charging that allows for an easy and intuitive charging experience.*

Link: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT208078

It's clearly wireless charging. There are no wires, it's called wireless charging on the box, and Apple advertises it as such.

If someone else wants to try to make up a new meaning for the word, they can go ahead, but they're going to look silly when they try to tell us wireless charging isn't wireless charging, when there are clearly no wires, and it is charging.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Yep, that flat wireless charger is the contact pad charger, the phone makes physical contact with the charger, and this is not wireless charging,

I know what you're saying, but according to official wireless standards it actually is. But whatever. There are reasons that the contactless charging you are talking about hasn't been implemented yet. Nobody, not just Apple, has been able to make it work effectively enough to use at this time. Maybe one of the other manufacturers will be first to release a model that incorporates it but that's not a big deal. Apple doesn't need to be first with it. They just need to be good. It seems regulatory standards will prove to be one of the biggest hurdles for this to become a widely used tech.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

that flat wireless charger is the contact pad charger, the phone makes physical contact with the charger, and this is not wireless charging

Yes it is. There are no wires. Therefore it is wireless.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

As I said there is no wireless charging, and looks like everyone thinks there is wireless charging, which is not wireless charging but contact pad charging

Um, yeah, that's wireless.

You were using your own definition of the word. Don't blame us for using the definition of the word as it actually means (you know, 'no wires'), when you are using some specialized meaning of the word. The onus on you is to explain what you mean by 'wireless' if you don't mean 'no wires'. Getting all high on your horse because we don't understand you using an obscure reference is just silly.

That's why I had to finally differentiate the two and introduce the actual terminology.

Um, the word wireless already exists. You aren't introducing anything. You're using it in a non-standard way.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The flat wireless charger which I have plugged into my computer uSB works fine without the need to plug the cable in

Yep, that flat wireless charger is the contact pad charger, the phone makes physical contact with the charger, and this is not wireless charging, true wireless charging where you could charge your phone from a distance is yet to arrive.. this (wireless charging) is what apple was working on earlier, but could not make it work and they finally went with the standard contact pad charging.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

As I said there is no wireless charging, and looks like everyone thinks there is wireless charging, which is not wireless charging but contact pad charging, that's why I had to finally differentiate the two and introduce the actual terminology.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Ahhhh... contactless charging! That's different to wireless charging.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Ok, but you're saying people don't know the difference between something that was never referred to.

Was anyone else in this thread on either side of the debate talking about what you are?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Um, you're the only one who has suddenly introduced this new terminology into the the thread.

Are you saying that contact pads have wires?

That's the thing, the difference it seems is not known. The contact pad charging which we have now, the device makes physical contact with the contact pad, In true wireless charging there will be no contact with the charger, your device could be at a distance of 10-15 feet from the wireless charger.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Well I can definitely see that you have a difficult time understanding the difference between wireless and contact pad charging.

Um, you're the only one who has suddenly introduced this new terminology into the the thread.

I can see you have a hard time understanding technology. All iPhones have wireless charging, fact. What those articles talk about is reverse wireless charging, which is a meh feature.

Well I can definitely see that you have a difficult time understanding the difference between wireless and contact pad charging.

What I was pointing to was true wireless charging using RF from a distance of 10-15 feet, and not contact pad charging, for the contact pad charging Apple has just followed the footsteps of Samsung with Qi and PMA "dual mode". Further the contact pad charging on the Apple watch was a simple software hack of Qi, so they could thus avoid paying royalty to WPC (Qi) and charge an arm and a leg for their "proprietary" charger.

Apple rarely lead. They wait and do it best.

Compare the pictures result from triple lenses smartphone Camera and single smartphone camera, I saw no much difference between triple - lenses or cameras and single lens camera. The faster lens will produce better pictures. I think the triple lens smartphone camera's picture result will improve time being but it's still developing stage.

I'm DSLR fan and I'm using Nikon D700 and D300. The smartphone cannot replace DSLR Camera in picture quality. For the pictures quality, the smartphone camera cannot replace even shutterless Camera but I must confess the smartphone camera was very convenient and handy for use in any occasions. You will have Camera in your hand if you have smartphone in your hand and then you're ready to shoot from accident to unexpected childhood friend meeting in the city or on the train.

Apple engineering my rear lmao. I'm a Sony fan and consider myself fairly extreme, but at least I'm justified as Sony has expertise in anything from visual to audio. You Apple fanboys are something else lmao.

Apple engineering lead in several areas. One is processor design. Other companies like Qualcomm, HiSilicon and Samsung can't touch Apple's A series processors for performance and efficiency.

The other area that I was alluding to in my comment is miniaturisation. Look at the Apple Watch, it has amazing power and battery life and yet the smallest models are 38mm. Garmin and Samsung still can't make powerful watches in small form factors.

Apple rarely lead. They wait and do it best. Like Touch ID and Face ID. Other companies were first, but the first Touch ID that you didn't need to scan your finger was Apple. The first Face ID that was actually secure, was Apple.

Apple is primarily a design and packaging company, for example the arm processor, LCD/OLED display on your iphone is engineered and made by Samsung

The design of the A13 is what makes it amazing. Any foundry can manufacture a chip. Not any company can design the fastest CPU and GPU in a phone. That takes expertise. And in fact Samsung don't manufacture the A13, it's TSMC. Even though Samsung can make Apple chips, they still can't design one that is as fast as an A13.

The Surface is very very successful among those who use it for work, ipad was and still is primarily a entertainment device..and that's the difference.

Like I said. The Surface just a laptop with a touch screen. And they sell in way lower numbers than iPads.

Guess you know nothing about Surface..so let's leave it there..

You have to step out of the premium iPhone world, I switched from my 1000 dollar Samsung phone to a Samsung phone costing 250 dollars, It does everything what the top end Samsung phone did, the difference is mostly form factors, the camera is few mega pixel less and that's fine.

Ok... just FYI my iPhone is a 6S and I'm not looking to upgrade right now. I replaced the battery a couple of weeks ago and I'm hoping for another good year of use (maybe two). It's not one of the premium iPhones by any means. The last two iPhone releases I have been completely underwhelmed by. I couldn't care less about the better camera either. But you've just said step out of the premium iPhone world into a budget Samsung and be able to do everything a high end Samsung phone can do. A high end Samsung phone might have some great features... absolutely no argument from me there... and I even agree that there are phones for people on a much lower budget which will do the same. But a low end Samsung phone doesn't have the same functionality as an iPhone. The feature which BertieWooster was talking about is extremely important to a lot of people and there isn't anything that can match it for them as of this time. That said... yes there are some great low cost phones now especially if you're only using the basic features. No argument there.

For real photography I use a professional camera, no smartphone camera will ever catch up with a top professional camera anyway.

I agree... I think it's mostly about the glass.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

There really aren't. Unless all you want to do is browse the web, make calls, send messages, play games etc... Sure... Any phone can do that.

@Tawkeeo

Where did I say you couldn't find high quality phones cheaper? That's not what I said. Finding a phone that will do what an iPhone does for half of a quarter the price is actually very difficult. And so what about Sony lenses? Do you think Sony didn't obtain it's photography expertise from somebody else originally?

I can start writing an email on Gmail on my Android when I'm out and about, and when I come back home I can login to Gmail on my laptop and continue writing that same email.

So your trying to compare a webmail service with the functionality of an iPhone. Not even close to the same but you can do that exact thing on an iPhone if you want as well.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

@Haaa Nemui

What else do you use your phone for? Edit videos? Lol. With the exception of photography, which by and large have to thank Sony for providing Apple with excellent lenses, you can find plenty of high quality smartphones at half, or less, of what you pay for an iPhone. Android isn't what it used to be 6 or 7 years ago. It's fast, smooth, fairly consistent design wise, etc.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Since the last gen, it sounds like Apple Watches have started putting out usable elevation data, so you can use them with Strava like a Garmin. Any smartphone with a free app will work with Strava for distance and mapping, but the elevation data you get is very unreliable.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Apple TV, Disney, Netfix, Amazon, HBO, BBC...etc this is getting way to crowded, the question has to be asked, is there enough content to justify all of these different streaming services.

Consumers will be tolerant and willing to pay, to a point, but... as soon as quality dips and or prices go up (which they will, Netflix this year for example) those consumers will vote with their feet and leave. This has all the signs of an early bubble, similar to the video games market of the late 70s early 80s. Too many services, not enough quality!

Ha ha very funny. Basically, Garmin and Samsung can't match Apple's superior engineering and hence can't manage to shrink the internals of a watch. It's one reason that Apple are kiing it in the wearables market.

The iPad is far from dead. What works for me is that the iPhone, iPad, iMac work seamlessly together. Anything added to my iPhone is instantly reflected on the iMac and my MacBook Air. This is going to be even better with Catalina with "Sidecar" that makes it possible to use an iPad as a second monitor. You can sketch on the iPad and edit it immediately on your iMac. Logic Pro does a wonderful job of putting the controllers and switches on the iPad and the main window on the iMac.

I think that people who diss the iPhone, iPad, etc., are not considering the other Apple products that connect with it. It's a whole system and if you use it as such, you see the value of it. No other system has this level of integration. I can start writing an email on the train on my iPhone. Then later, at home, I can finish it on my iMac.

Buyers of an iPhone, iPad or Mac will get a free year of streaming TV, potentially drawing hundreds of millions of viewers to the service. That catapults the new service into a rarified group of companies.

This is kind of a huge deal. Will make the service a big threat to some of the others. Without even looking at the hardware, the pricing of their streaming services have made me decide to stick with Apple for now.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

That bump, a square with three lenses in it disturbs me more than it should. 3 lenses, make it a triangle, or make it a circle or do anything to make it symmetrical... but no a square with three lenses in it. Very un-Apple-like to ignore basic design issues.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

I must say it is nice that apple has caught up with offering multiple lens now. I have three lens on my phone and makes photography on a phone much improved with genuine zoom and wide angle lenses. However, such a large, asymmetrical, off centered bulge? (esp the pro model). Very un-apple. They usually have design nailed. I guess apple have accepted that 98% of people use a case and the bump can be offset and camouflaged to an extent. Apple machine keeps rolling. Though I wonder how many XS and XS max users will upgrade their already solid phones. People holding off still using 7s and 8s will be the target audience.
