So it's only Apple. Is the battery shutdown problem only an issue with iPhones but not other phones? If so, why is that?

No. It affects all phones that use Lithium-Ion batteries, i.e., all smartphones.

Better than Samsung and their battery exploding event. New battery available for the iPhone for $29, without testing. Apple could have handled the PR much better. Someone said, iPhones are expensive but I sold my wife's iPhone 6 to the provider for ¥25,000 and bought an iPhone 7 Plus for about ¥50,000 also from the provider which we'll update yearly, next one probably the iPhone 8 or 9? also the provider, au now provides unlimited calls and 1 GB DATABASE at about ¥4,000/month. Our monthly bill actually went down by ¥2,000.

Some questions:

** Do other smartphones' software updates also slow down the device without warning to compensate for old battery performance, or is it just Apple?

** If it's just Apple, then why is that the case? If it's others too, then why hasn't this detected before?

https://www.engadget.com/2017/12/29/samsung-lg-claim-older-phones-apple/

Apple has been under fire recently over the revelation that the company was intentionally slowing down older phones in order to balance performance and battery life. Now, LG and Samsung have both clarified to Phonearena that neither company engages in this kind of practice. HTC and Motorola made similar statements yesterday.

So it's only Apple. Is the battery shutdown problem only an issue with iPhones but not other phones? If so, why is that?

I have an iPhone 5 with iOS 10.3.3... so I stand by my claim.

And as for earlier phones... yes, it has happened before in various ways.

Any evidence?

And,... currently if you do not upgrade your phone to the latest version, the battery drain increases...

Are you stating the obvious that Li-Ion batteries degrade over time? This is true. It affects every smartphone in the world. Which is why Apple upgraded it's OS to take account of this and alleviate the effects.

So I am rapidly beginning to distrust Apple, plus all thus Apple cant do any wrong lovers out there giving Negative comments,.. you really do miss the big picture here... dont you. It's about Trust....

I wouldn't call myself an Apple lover, but I do think I am seeing the big picture here. Sorry you have trust issues.

2020hindsights would appear to be an Apple Employee... so take anything said with a pinch of salt.

Really? Just because I disagree with you? Try arguing the points rather than resorting to ad hominem.

And for those who've dealt with Apple Support, they are so arrogant and condescending at times, you really just wish to have an Apple Voodoo doll to hand and stab it in the heart. So, when an ice-breaking admission such as this comes to light, after many years of complaints, and subsequent poo-poo'ing back from Support ... it makes you wonder.... how can they be trusted in future ?

Folks, if you want a taste of what you can do with Andorid, download the BlueStacks App upon your PC and try out the numerous Android Apps. It's really enough now to make me seriously consider looking at an Alternative to Apple... as when I purchase an expensive bit of technology, I hope it lasts for at least 10 years.... not 2!!!!

They've been nobbling their iPhones for years, why just iPhone 6 ? What about iPhone 5 ?

Actually, no they haven't. It was introduced in iOS 10.2.1. iPhone 5 is not affected.

So planned obsolescence is finally proven without a doubt, but this is probably just the straw that breaks the camel's back.

This is not planned obsolescence. It is the opposite. It enables phones that would unexpectedly shutdown to function again. I.e. the opposite of planned obsolescence.

I've been an Iphone user for more than 10 years, with a number of ipads as well, but I will be switching to android for my next phone. Enough is enough.

Time for your tin-foil hat it seems...

I DONT believe apple, they are very likely lying their a$es off!

Any evidence for this? Apple haven't lied before, so why would they start now? Now Uber, on the other hand...

GW: "I DONT believe apple, they are very likely lying their a$$es off!"

Maybe, but then they'd just be in even bigger crap upon the lie, which would be pretty obvious to spot if you paid more than $29 for a batter replacement. They messed up with the slowed thingy, and their fan base got angry. If they were testing the waters, they got a response. I don't see why they'd be lying about steps they're taking after. How would they? unless it tells you your battery's no good when it is (but I think that's something you'd know). I'd replace my 6's batter with a new one for that price because I still use it via tethering on occasion but the battery lasts about 10 minutes.
