Tracking is a serious privacy concern.

When you post online, definitely expect to give up that privacy, but when you just view articles, should that tracking be required?

Certainly if advertisers can do it, then repressive govts can to it too. Especially with help from companies like google, https://theintercept.com/2018/09/14/google-china-prototype-links-searches-to-phone-numbers/ the Chinese version of Google will tie searches to phone numbers. That will certainly help the Chinese govt decide who may not be working in harmony with their single-party ideals. Is that desirable?

What if Russia does it or UK or USA or African nations or India or Japan? Does that change the answer?

Everyone deserves to be as private as they want online, IMHO.

I agree, this is so creepy and alarming. I try not to use Google as much as I can. I mostly use Firefox and I hope they will get better at preventing this because everyone deserves privacy.
