Let’s hope it helps everyone. But does anyone remember that Facebook CEO Zuckerburg, in 2010, donated 100 million dollars to Newark, New Jersey (and matched by private donations), thus equaling 200 million dollars, in an effort to help the failing school system? That’s a hunk of change, yet not much came of it. Read for yourself:

Then why are they called black colleges?

They aren't. They're known as 'historically black colleges & universities,' or HBCUs. Back in the segregated days, they were the only colleges many black students could go to. None of them are 'only black' in any way, shape or form.

African slaves came to the US chained up in the cargo holds of slave ships.

Yah, not my fault. Not my duty to perform any kind of restitution. Don't complain to me. Don't ask me for a hand out. Try harder.

Each generation of immigrants that landed on the shores in NY City harbor like my grand parents often went to the lower East Side to those ghettos and found their paths out through study, perseverance and parents determined to do better for their children.

African slaves came to the US chained up in the cargo holds of slave ships. Upon arrival they were taken to a slave market and sold to the highest bidder. Mothers, fathers and children separated forever, sold into a life of hard labor where an education of any kind was forbidden. This persisted for over 250 years if you count the British colonial period under which slavery was instituted. Then even after emancipation these former slaves found themselves living in segregated communities, barred from voting by poll taxes literacy tests and other artificial barriers, barred from "whites only"" businesses, barred from major public universities, if they had a k-12 school system offered it was grossly inferior to the schools whites attended, they were barred from many good paying occupations. Blacks to this day face many barriers to achievement not the least of which are unequal educational opportunities and various business practices like red lining that make it very hard for blacks to get the kinds of loans whites and Asians routinely obtain to start and build a business. But despite all that people like you blithely assume it all the fault of the blacks that they haven't caught up to the whites while seemingly resenting any economic progress they do make as somehow a threat to your own standard of living.

I wonder how Brazil handles this as they had more slaves than the US.

Race relations in Brazil roughly track US trends and blacks face institutional discrimination in their country much like that in the US. Like the US it was 1950 before it became illegal for a hotel to deny service to a black customer. There was nothing akin to Reconstruction in Brazil. When slaves were eventually freed they had nothing, no land, no money, nothing. When voting was finally instituted only literate males could vote, which eliminated uneducated former slaves. Aspects of African culture were made illegal. Between 1889 and 1914 the Brazilian government pursued a policy of racial "whitening".

There is also a lesson from the military governments of Brazil in the later 20th Century that pursued a policy of what they called "Racial Democracy" arguing Brazilians were all the same and there was no need to discuss race at all. That policy failed because while nobody would talk about it, the racism very much existed and a boiling pot was going to explode if the lid wasn't lifted as afro groups were excluded from power. Not talking about racism in fact furthered the extent of it.

There's nothing that enrages a white person more than someone helping minorities and NOT helping white people equivalently.

Is there anything more evil on this planet than someone who helps a minority and doesn't equally help white people? It's completely disgusting.

White people are a minority of only 11.5% on the planet, so what are you talking about?

That's only fair because Apple invests millions to back white entrepreneurs all the time. Oh, wait...

Good products, services, ideas and business plans are color blind.

Money flows to them.

American Indians have the highest poverty rate in the US. Hispanics have the second highest poverty rate.

They just don't have as good lobbyists and a well-oiled victim PR machine.

Yet somehow only the US has to continually answer for it today

Hysterical and completely inaccurate yet again. Living in a bubble with the walls closing in.

For many years there has been a debate in the UK regarding reparations for slavery. The statue of a slave trader in Bristol was torn down and thrown into a river last year. There has been controversy over the legacy of Cecil Rhodes. There is a slavery museum in my hometown highlighting slavery’s continued legacy to the present day.

I could go on here.

So, no. Not ‘somehow only the US has to continually answer for it today’.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Yet somehow only the US has to continually answer for it today, and people like you who hate the US enjoy singling out the US.

Yeah, because the whole country was founded on racism, on white supremacy. Slavery made America what it is.

But you'd be hard-pressed to find a single Black American who would re-locate to Africa today

Well of course not. Who the hell would immigrate from the US to a developing nation where they know nothing of the language or a culture.

For descendants of slaves, it was very very fortuitous.

Ah yes, negroes should be happy they were once slaves.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Black Africans didn’t “come to America” on an immigrant ship. They were slaves and came against their will.

and every single country on earth practiced slavery, including England.

The worst slave traders were Africans themselves.

Yet somehow only the US has to continually answer for it today, and people like you who hate the US enjoy singling out the US.

But you'd be hard-pressed to find a single Black American who would re-locate to Africa today. For descendants of slaves, it was very very fortuitous.

One can only run uphill for so long and eventually gravity will find its way and bring you down. Don't throw money around because it is cool to do.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Then why are they called black colleges?

Not black colleges, "Historically Black Colleges and Universities." They exist because historically Blacks weren't allowed to attend traditional universities. They were excluded from programs such as the homestead act and the GI Bill, which provides free college for American veterans.

Better place your bets on the sun freezing during next week. That has a probability, although rather small....lol

Do you really believe that? Really? Or did you just write it to be “edgy?”

I know China fairly well, and you?

Start putting money into the minority population's bank accounts and give them equality to use it to profit themselves and the community, by giving them free education and equal opportunity in all employment fields.

Apple doesn't write laws although the United Sates does have laws that make it illegal to discriminate based on race.

Where are all the class action lawsuits?

Oh thats right. The top 11 Median Household Incomes by selected Ethnic groups are as follows;

Indian

Taiwanese

Chinese

Japanese

Pakistani

Filipino

Indonesian

Korean

Cambodian

Hmong

Vietnamese

Whites are 12th.

Group identity politics and judging success and lack thereof as oppressor/oppressed can only lead to disaster.

Look up what happened to the Ukrainian Kulaks in the 1930's. Its just one example. The US is headed firmly in that direction.

Are you saying that only people of a certain color should receive money and free education?

Diamonds are a girl's best friend.

I like vanilla ice cream more than chocolate ice cream.

I think I left the iron on this morning.

I don't like the smell of corn.

Who is responsible for the pothole on my street? Aliens? Think about it..

On December 11th, 1991, I nearly hit a dog on a highway.

I need my food mushed up in a nice, easy-to-swallow pulp before I eat.

Why don't we see nice family entertainment at the theatre these days? I don't like all the language and violence.

Have I lost all my faculties?

Most likely..

Its Apple's money and they can do whatever they want with it. But business and profits don't care about identity politics and virtue signaling.

They might as well burn it all in Tim Cook's back yard.

A company that uses slave labor in China to this day making "reparations" for descendants of slaves in the US

Do you really believe that? Really? Or did you just write it to be “edgy?”

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Rich in irony. A company that uses slave labor in China to this day making "reparations" for descendants of slaves in the US. This is what you get with corporate totalitarianism.

"Unnamed congressional staffers have accused Apple of trying to water down an anti forced labor bill that would place obligations on US companies to ensure their supply chain was not involved in such abuse. The bill aims to end the use of forced Uighur labor in the Xinjiang region of China."

Nothing but a PR campaign out of self interest

There are White students and students of all ethnicities at the various HBCUs.

Just keep the whole slave labor thingy on the down-low will ya please?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

How much black does a person need to have to be accepted at a ‘black’ university?

None. There are White students and students of all ethnicities at the various HBCUs. In fact in 2008, the valedictorian of Morehouse College, one of the most historical HBCUs, was white. I was even offered a scholarship to North Carolina A&T, a HBCU, when I'm not Black.

millions??

shouldn't that be billions?

It has a market cap of more than 2000 millions, doesn't it?

the date is Jan 16 or there abouts..

"We wanted to see more Black and brown developers," Jackson said,

Why does "Black" get a capital letter while "brown" doesn't? This conundrum should tie the identitarians in knots for a while.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

I'm "of color", too. Kind of a light, creamy latte. A little bit of bronze in the warmer months.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

It boggles the mind to read that the so-called ‘melting pot’ has ‘black colleges’, ‘black schools’, ‘black churches’.

How much black does a person need to have to be accepted at a ‘black’ university?

Would eg the only half-black Barack Obama have what it takes to be accepted?

Over a century and a half after the abolition of slavery in America, and still people are being judged, and defining themselves, by skin colour.

It’s very sad.

I understand (I think) Apples’s desire to tackle systemic racism, but I’m not sure singling people out by skin colour is the way to do it.

I agree with sourpuss - helping all poor, disadvantaged people would be better than helping only poor, disadvantaged people with a particular genetic makeup and would better address the problem of systemic racism.

10 ( +14 / -4 )

Nice.. but Apple should have done this long time back..at-least should have started this during the Obama era.

This funding will only work for "self-made" individuals rest will all go down the benefits blackhole. If Apple is really interested in challenging systemic racism, than they have to invest billions in the education sector and promote only those (vid ads, movies etc) with good academic/work records..only that will slowly change the culture...otherwise this is nothing more than a PR stunt.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Mixed feelings.

Donating directly to black colleges, and making funds available to all poor people in Detroit would be better, imho.

In the first case, it’s undeniable that slaves had a worse experience than any of the immigrants today, and so righting past wrongs... okay, I think the vast majority of people can get behind that.

And in the second case, if the money was available to ALL poor people in Detroit, it would likely go mostly to black people anyway, without pitting whites and the entire category of poc against each other.

Identity politics is undeniably corrosive to society. It’s important to find ways to help the most needy, without pitting people against one another.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

I do hope it works and that the businesses don’t get burned down.

Too late for Mr. Taylor and Mr. Floyd. They would have made great business men because of their street savvy which is important in business circles.
