Let’s hope it helps everyone. But does anyone remember that Facebook CEO Zuckerburg, in 2010, donated 100 million dollars to Newark, New Jersey (and matched by private donations), thus equaling 200 million dollars, in an effort to help the failing school system? That’s a hunk of change, yet not much came of it. Read for yourself:

Then why are they called black colleges?

They aren't. They're known as 'historically black colleges & universities,' or HBCUs. Back in the segregated days, they were the only colleges many black students could go to. None of them are 'only black' in any way, shape or form.

Each generation of immigrants that landed on the shores in NY City harbor like my grand parents often went to the lower East Side to those ghettos and found their paths out through study, perseverance and parents determined to do better for their children.

African slaves came to the US chained up in the cargo holds of slave ships. Upon arrival they were taken to a slave market and sold to the highest bidder. Mothers, fathers and children separated forever, sold into a life of hard labor where an education of any kind was forbidden. This persisted for over 250 years if you count the British colonial period under which slavery was instituted. Then even after emancipation these former slaves found themselves living in segregated communities, barred from voting by poll taxes literacy tests and other artificial barriers, barred from "whites only"" businesses, barred from major public universities, if they had a k-12 school system offered it was grossly inferior to the schools whites attended, they were barred from many good paying occupations. Blacks to this day face many barriers to achievement not the least of which are unequal educational opportunities and various business practices like red lining that make it very hard for blacks to get the kinds of loans whites and Asians routinely obtain to start and build a business. But despite all that people like you blithely assume it all the fault of the blacks that they haven't caught up to the whites while seemingly resenting any economic progress they do make as somehow a threat to your own standard of living.

I wonder how Brazil handles this as they had more slaves than the US.

Race relations in Brazil roughly track US trends and blacks face institutional discrimination in their country much like that in the US. Like the US it was 1950 before it became illegal for a hotel to deny service to a black customer. There was nothing akin to Reconstruction in Brazil. When slaves were eventually freed they had nothing, no land, no money, nothing. When voting was finally instituted only literate males could vote, which eliminated uneducated former slaves. Aspects of African culture were made illegal. Between 1889 and 1914 the Brazilian government pursued a policy of racial "whitening".

There is also a lesson from the military governments of Brazil in the later 20th Century that pursued a policy of what they called "Racial Democracy" arguing Brazilians were all the same and there was no need to discuss race at all. That policy failed because while nobody would talk about it, the racism very much existed and a boiling pot was going to explode if the lid wasn't lifted as afro groups were excluded from power. Not talking about racism in fact furthered the extent of it.

There's nothing that enrages a white person more than someone helping minorities and NOT helping white people equivalently.

Is there anything more evil on this planet than someone who helps a minority and doesn't equally help white people? It's completely disgusting.

For many years there has been a debate in the UK regarding reparations for slavery. The statue of a slave trader in Bristol was torn down and thrown into a river last year. There has been controversy over the legacy of Cecil Rhodes. There is a slavery museum in my hometown highlighting slavery’s continued legacy to the present day.

I could go on here.

Not black colleges, "Historically Black Colleges and Universities." They exist because historically Blacks weren't allowed to attend traditional universities. They were excluded from programs such as the homestead act and the GI Bill, which provides free college for American veterans.

Apple doesn't write laws although the United Sates does have laws that make it illegal to discriminate based on race.

None. There are White students and students of all ethnicities at the various HBCUs. In fact in 2008, the valedictorian of Morehouse College, one of the most historical HBCUs, was white. I was even offered a scholarship to North Carolina A&T, a HBCU, when I'm not Black.

Over a century and a half after the abolition of slavery in America, and still people are being judged, and defining themselves, by skin colour.

I understand (I think) Apples’s desire to tackle systemic racism, but I’m not sure singling people out by skin colour is the way to do it.

I agree with sourpuss - helping all poor, disadvantaged people would be better than helping only poor, disadvantaged people with a particular genetic makeup and would better address the problem of systemic racism.

Nice.. but Apple should have done this long time back..at-least should have started this during the Obama era.

This funding will only work for "self-made" individuals rest will all go down the benefits blackhole. If Apple is really interested in challenging systemic racism, than they have to invest billions in the education sector and promote only those (vid ads, movies etc) with good academic/work records..only that will slowly change the culture...otherwise this is nothing more than a PR stunt.

Mixed feelings.

Donating directly to black colleges, and making funds available to all poor people in Detroit would be better, imho.

In the first case, it’s undeniable that slaves had a worse experience than any of the immigrants today, and so righting past wrongs... okay, I think the vast majority of people can get behind that.

And in the second case, if the money was available to ALL poor people in Detroit, it would likely go mostly to black people anyway, without pitting whites and the entire category of poc against each other.

Identity politics is undeniably corrosive to society. It’s important to find ways to help the most needy, without pitting people against one another.

I do hope it works and that the businesses don’t get burned down.

Too late for Mr. Taylor and Mr. Floyd. They would have made great business men because of their street savvy which is important in business circles.
