I think the US should impose a very high gross revenue tax, something on the order of 25% of gross revenues, on US firms doing business in China that agree to comply with Chinese censorship rules. That would include airlines, hotels and other businesses that refer to Taiwan by names like "Chinese Taipei" in order to make the PRC happy. US citizens who succumb to CCP pressure are the lowest of the low, maybe even lower than child molesters, and deserve nothing but opprobrium.

Did everyone see that the Apple factory in China (Foxconn with hundreds of thousands of workers there) has been on lock down. Workers are jumping over fences to get out: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-63447755

One 22-year-old worker, surnamed Xia, told the Financial Times it was "total chaos in the dormitories" he and colleagues were being kept in. "We jumped a plastic fence and a metal fence to get out of the campus," he added.

Also, Apple has been caught AGAIN lying about not tracking iOS users. https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-analytics-tracking-even-when-off-app-store-1849757558

Is that a company to be giving your money to, especially when they are supporting the CCP draconian rules? We can only let Apple know our displeasure with our wallets.

I am a more than 20-year happy Apple user and see no reasons to try. Battled with Windows several times but for me, Macs just work.

How about a US assembled Velocity Micro laptop with the only Chinese components being the case, screen and outboard DVD player. Nothing made in China touches data since you have some options to pick the components you want. Everything in mine is from the US, Taiwan or South Korea. Operating system is Linux Mint using the Cinnamon GUI. For work I use Libre Office, Brave browser and Duck-Duck-Go search engine? I have a MacBook and this is every bit as nice but with no bloatware. You order only the software you need or want and nothing more, and everything is open source. No buffing up the credit card to buy apps from Apple. I did a software update while I was typing this.

The main problem with your suggestion is that I would no longer be able to use macOS, iOs, or iPadOs. I would have to use Windows or maybe Linux.

I have never bought an app from Apple or anyone else. Apple does not even have my credit card details. Yesterday I updated two iPhones and two iPads in about 15 minutes.

My Macs, my iPhones, and iPads all work very nicely together and sync very well. I can start my work on one of my 12-year-old Macs using a 12-year-old keyboard and mouse. I can pick up my iPad from 2018 and continue with the same document. I can continue with the document on my iPhone 12.

My Apple devices help me earn money easier than when I try to use Windows.

I have tried Linux and have it on my Macs with VMware Fusion but it can never replace the Apple OS. I don't need to use Libre Office because Apple Pages and Microsoft Word work fine for me. Several Windows computers are in cupboards collecting dust.

I do major visual presentations, hundreds of them, with up to 200 slides. Apple Keynote is just fantastic for making them. I can edit and produce on any of my Apple Devices, moving from one to another. From those Keynotes, I publish pdf files which are published online. Or I make a movie and upload it to YouTube. I can make very professional movies using iMovie.

I make my own music on GarageBand. I can play several instruments and then put them together.

I have even mostly stopped using my DSLR and video camera but the results from my iPhone are good.

Brave browser and Duck-Duck-Go are not limited and available for Macs. I prefer the Epic browser.

I have tried all of those on Linux and it is much better than 10 years ago. But it does not work on my iPad or iPhone.

I mostly buy from the Apple refurbished dept. Better price.

In 20 years I have spent less than ¥300,000 for all of my many Apple devices. About ¥1250/month.

@wallace, my next step is to replace my iPhone 2020 that Apple will not replace the cracked rear glass cover of (they want me to replace it with something newer at a cost of nearly $400) with a phone running Linux. To hades with Apple! A two year old phone and I can't even get a simple repair. None of the independent shops can repair it either. No parts. I used to like Apple but no more. Never again. I taped up the cracked rear glass and will use it as is until I find the right phone running Linux.

I'll keep using my MacBook for leisure travel to watch videos or the internet since it packs small but if it breaks I will replace it with another smaller Velocity Micro laptop running Linux.

What drove me to go with Linux and Libre Office was Windows 10. With Windows 7 I could buy Office once and update it as necessary. With Win10 I have to buy Office each year and the cost is over $100. They can blow me. Win10 is just miserable and intrusive in so many ways that I have sworn them and Edge off forever. I won't even use Edge at work even though our employer wants us to.

I am also finding within the Linux community that almost any software out there that says it only runs on Mac OS or Windows, like Canon cameras and printers, can run on Linux. The Linux community has come up with code you can copy and paste into the Terminal window to integrate these outboard devices and ostensibly non-Linux compatible software to run just fine on the Linux OS.

It's true about what @theFu says about Apple's privacy and data tracking, they're currently being sued in the US over this. What I worry about, is whether Apple allows the CCP access to this information - particularly the details of Chinese expat dissidents. TikTok does this...
