looks like that innovation may be running out, or was it just a mirage in the first place!?

Ah, you cannot expect to keep bringing out new products a every year and keep the same sales rate. Most people are using iPhones that are two to three years old and have no need to upgrade, me included. It's not so much that the popularity of the product has dropped, but that the market has peaked and iPhone users see no need to upgrade. Unlike the Android competitors. Their plastic garbage is stuffed after a year and you have to upgrade.

iPhone 7 has to really advance the product line by a huge leap to maintain sales but that may take more than 18 months to develop. 18 months is an eternity in tech terms.

It's already been more than 18 months since the iPhone 6 came out. Apple generally runs on a 2+ year cycle with each new version of the iphone taking a little over 2 years to come out.

It's been 13 years of continuous growth - this was bound to happen at some point. Some factors to consider:

-- Last year, a lot of people went to iPhone 6 due to the larger screen. The larger screen is pretty much the last big salvo of tangible benefit that people were looking for. Now, the other foreseeable improvements aren't considered that essential - good to have but not a must. So last year is hard to match.

-- For that above reason and other reasons, people keep their phones longer now. People are past the hype of upgrading phones every time just because a business tells ya to. Furthermore, many cellular carriers have been shying away from subsidies in exchange for 2-year contracts.

-- iPhones are for the premium market, and that's hitting saturation point. There's only so many rich-enough people in the world to sell to.

Apple's issue is 2/3rds of their business is now iPhones, so they feast or famine out of that, while they haven't had new must-have product lately. Apple said iPad and Mac sales both fell also in the quarter. Meanwhile, the company is also widely believed to be working on other new products, such as virtual reality headsets and even electric cars, to diversify.

Unlike the Android competitors. Their plastic garbage is stuffed after a year and you have to upgrade. LOL my Samsung Galaxy outperforms the Iphone in every benchmark , far from plastic and has been going strong for almost 2 years. oh and I didnt getting shafted paying for premium a brand name that doesnt give me any extra performance or free option upgrades. and here lies the big con with all those expensive brand name goods that just make people feel like there exclusive and or rich and or unique. LMFAO

A new lithium battery will only last 2-3 years. People buy in cycles. Sales for Apple in Japan were good.

You can always replace the battery. it's not that hard. If you don't know how to do it, there are many places that will replace the battery for you.

What do they expect, to have people paying 70.000 yen for a new phone every two years?

apple still my # 1 choice, good quality last long time

If it were only the phone, I would likely try an Android. I like a lot of the features in the OS, and some of the phones are pretty nice.

But if you own other Apple stuff, iphones fit into the ecosystem really well. I have Macs, ipads, Apple TV, and an Apple Watch (though I rarely wear it anymore). The way they all work together is great, and switching to an Android that wouldn't tie into it all would leave me with an isolated device that doesn't work with everything else.

My iPhone is 3 years old and perfectly fine. Why burden planet and pocketbook by upgrading?
