This should be global. It's how apple keeps control on what users are allowed to have on their apple devices.

No, it's how iOS is designed to keep users safe. It's a sandbox, and apps on the app store are verified by Apple, there is an entire process involved to get an app on the app store, without that process, AND the sandbox, users are at the mercy of scammers.
Keep it to EU only, and let users in the EU suffer the consequences of clueless bureaucrats.
So glad I don't own apple stocks any more, this move makes it even less safe than Android for EU users.
Also I don't know why the EU hasn't forced google to do the same for Android Playstore, it's the same model. Trust.

They didn’t have a choice. lol. And like others said. It should be global.

As iPhone user I assume EU put too much their nose into Apple. However I won't delete AppStore which I assume is safer to download apps then directly from developers. Of course it maybe case by case. As Mac user too, it is already possible to download apps direct from developers websites.
Agree with another post here. Why not force z google. Well, Google with its Android system want more and they make EU to push Apple to open up for let's say iMessage which will be not anymore secured as it is now.
By the way, I use "European" iPhone with Japanese AppStore. Probably new AI features on iOS18 banned by EU will be available for me in this case
