I still don't get smartwatches, I feel like the whole idea was started by tech journalists who were aching for the next big thing after the iphone.

I doubt this story.

Samsung and Google better hurry up with their copies!

Although I haven't used a watch for years now, if Apple's watch shortens the time it takes to grab the iPhone from the bag, or the pocket of my jeans, to check messages, calls and other notifications, I surely will have one.

it's definitely a niche market right now. i've had a pebble smart watch for over a year now and i've come to depend on it greatly. i receive a ton of email from work, and it's 1000% easier to glance at the notification on my watch and determine if it's something i need to act on, or simply read and go about my business.

google has already announced and released a developer 'smart watch os' as well as worked with partners to create watches based on this.

samsung has had a smart watch for over a year now.

yes, but if you were well informed about technology, you'd know that as soon as it was rumoured that Apple would release a smartwatch, back in 2012, Samsung hurried up and released its clunky watch. It was so hurried up that the first models hurt the wrist, it was very badly finished. And not tested, as some reviews said.

Just bought a Galaxy Note 8" Tablet (clearing out the old models for the new ones = $200 off).

These watches really don't do much yet. However if your phone is one of the too big to carry ones -you may want the watch. Who wears watches anymore?

If you look at what was revealed with Apple's iOS 8.0 coming in September 2014, you can tell it's heavily designed to work with an external smartwatch with its HealthKit functionality. As such, this points to the unveiling of the so-called iWatch possibly as early as mid October 2014.

I'd be too embarrassed to have an iPhone and an iWatch to go with it.

The "slave to Apple" factor would be off the scale...

Meh... I'll stick with my Breitling thanks. Not interested in smartwatches, least of all one made by Apple. Considering Dick Tracy had one, albeit fictional due to the lack of technology at the time, the concept is far from new or innovative. Casio had those calculator watches way back in the 80's. The Galaxy Gear isn't bad looking, and the Moto 360 looks kind of promising, but nothing beats a good mechanical when it comes to watches.

Yes, and both were extremely rushed for release after info was leaked Apple was developing a smart watch, and if I'm not mistaken, Samsung had to rush out a second model ("Gear 2") because the first was so poor. It's claim to fame? you can submerge it in water for up to half an hour! They even ditched the Android OS because they know how crappy it is!!
