I have an iMac computer and iPod Touch and I love both of them very much. I am not, however a fan of the iPhone. For my major communications needs, I use my Samsung Galaxy Note II Android phone. Android is also very good. I love it but still love Apple too. I'm a happy camper!

wait didnt think Apples got any worns/bugs? or is it just another PR thing to keep people interested in Iphone/ipads and to stop the shares sliding?

You are a proof that Apple keep people interested: you are clearly not an Apple user, but keep posting over and over about Apple, iPhone...now, measure how Apple users are interested using yourself as a parameter. Apple knows how to do the work, doesn't it? And, 6.1 was in the works since November, not a "PR thing" to mask the recent shares up-and-downs.

I'll be installing it tonight. Apple updates are usually bug free. The iOS6 update was a little buggy and the maps was a PR disaster, but the person responsible for the maps fiasco was fired, as he should have been. It is interesting that people keep making comparisons with android and saying it is so much better. Obviously, these people have never had an iPhone or iPad and think what they have is better. Everyone I know that has an android phone hates it and calls it junk, which quite fitting because the android os is only a copy of Apple's iOS and a pretty poor one as well.

Apple's new OS is boss. iPad Mini owner here. It's almost perfect now. It's so hard to put this device down and leave it alone. It just works. Everything you want it to do it does.

I'm suspicious of the numbers posted for Android. I'm sure they have a good phone but they don't seem to market it well. When it comes to showmanship, Apple has it down-pack.

I'm willing to pay more for the Apple product. That's just how it is.

Really the 128GB iPad etc is the bigger story.

Basroil-san, are you aware that this upgrade is 6.1?

That's an upgrade from 6.01.

Not a lot has changed, because it's not a huge upgrade. 0.9 of an upgrade, in fact.

If you don't like iOS, don't use it. Nobody's forcing you to.

Stick with your Andrex, sorry, Adenoid, I mean Android and the MS Surface that apparently sold nearly 230,000 :)

The 6.1 upgrade installed perfectly, swiftly and wirelessly.

Everything feels a little snappier, tough it wasn't slow to begin with. Safari is noticeably faster and dictation has improved dramatically. In fact, now the fastest way to input text is probably dictation. Now I don't need to carry a Bluetooth keyboard. Nice!

By the way, there never was anything wrong with Maps.app. It's MUCH easier to use than Google's version.

I downloaded the upgraded Google.Maps to try it out. It still sucks.

I'll stay with the Apple version.

It works.

Upgraded. Everything is running smooth. Features I liked best: Siri is witter. More languages in Dial Voice commands. iMaps never was a problem, still use it to make deliveries around the city, but good to see it being taken care of.

It was closer to 100 million until google maps, and they only have about 400 million semi-active devices, where most of the remaining ones aren't able to upgrade to ios6 anyway. They are a long way from XP's 600million, or 7's 500-600 million. Hell, Vista sold more copies and it was an utter failure. Only getting 80% penetration for a small update that's free? Kind of pathetic actually

Everyone and their dog knows that Microsoft illegally monopolized the PC market years ago inflating your numbers. See what Apple are capable of without resorting to criminal practices? Incredible!

About time. My iPad is getting more and more erratice as apps get bigger and better.

I think it's senseless to argue who is best at this point. The ones who think Windows is best for them will keep using it no matter freezings and crashes, or gigas less or more. The same for Apple, I never saw people leaving Apple even while complaining it's a closed system.

@James Botham: you too slam Apple in every opportunity you have. You are pointing an accusing finger to the mirror.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

You do make some fair points there, I did try the iPad with a keyboard I just didn't find I could get stuff done there was always something missing or not quite what I wanted. I used to find myself RDP in to a terminal server to get stuff done which kind of defeated the object!

In some ways the mobile 3/4G thing doesn't bother me, how I look at it is my phone has wireless teather so why pay for 2 mobile data plans when you can have one in the phone, in a corporate environment that is a huge cost saving. Also... No stopping you sticking a 3G stick in the side of it and using that if you really wanted to but would have been nice to build it in but for its first generation it will be interesting.

To be honest for now I have given up on the whole tablet concept it is a bit of a fad to me, you can't beat a laptop that can just sit on the side whilst you tap away or watch a film hands free!

I would like to see where that 45Gb is used, the whole beauty of MS selling the product and not Dell or HP is it does not come preinstalled with 2 tons of bloatware by third party vendors if it is like RT it is just Windows and Office! even our system images in the office that we use on customer sites are only about 15Gb-20Gb and they can include all sorts of third party application not just Office and Windows so how they got it to 45Gb heaven only knows! I wonder if they are including things like the page file and hibernation file things like that which could be taking up 16Gb of disk depending on how its configured which is a possibility.

I agree on Windows 7 over 8 in business,I think Microsoft were foolish removing the start button it confuses the hell out of people. The only thing I noticed is that it looks odd if it is there (using third part ons) when you snap an app to the right of the desktop it hovers in the middle of the screen but still they should have left it. I do like the new start menu though but I am a power user so in fairness I type and press enter on the app so I don't care either way!!

Forgot to say.. Windows 8 can be set to automatically encrypt all USB devices and system storage using Bit Locker so in a corporate environment it can just be turned on by default and that is it device secured.

Zichi,

I do wish there was a digital pen for the iPads

There are several.

If you want to draw/paint, the Jot Pro Stylus is excellent. It's pressure sensitive and is the closest I've found to drawing or painting on paper.

lol I work in IT as an IT Manager, I see the pain and misery Apple cause my support staff on a daily basis and the stats that back them up!! Windows crashing, freezing I have not seen it happen regularly for years it happens on every device though occasionally even OS X and IOS, I have Windows servers with 700+ day up times running business critical services day in day out so it is not an unstable OS anymore it grew up a long time ago.

As I said I don't use either personally, ironically I have a wiped clean Macbook Pro running Ubuntu Linux only with a Windows 8 Virtual Machine if I have to test something in the the Windows world so I am not biased I just look at the pain our customers see on a daily basis!

The average Mac support issue takes several hours to resolve where as a Windows one will take minutes normally, normally the Mac issue is an integration issue caused because of some weird Apple proprietary technology that you spend hours fiddling with and trying to work out which is what winds me up as I like open standards. At least Microsoft have started to use them a hell of a lot nowadays in most products, its time that Apple do the same and at least Microsoft if they create a standard nowadays it is now documented to the hilt so anybody can implement it.

Oh and before I get the "your staff obviously don't understand Apple" I have 2 senior engineers who are Apple certified so they do understand them!

46 gb use is probably the OS with full blown Office. Like every piece of Office available, which majority will never use things like Access, Infopath, Lync, etc. Course, I have no idea what version of Office is going to be dumped on the thing. If it comes with Office Professional Plus, fully installed, I'm surprised it'd only be 46 gb used for OS and Office.

I wiped my 128 gb Acer W700 and installed Win 8 Enterprise and Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook). Didn't even go over 20 gb. I still plan to swap my 128 gb mSATA SSD with a 256 gb one. I put too much stuff on my tablet.

is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system

It is indeed very far from being the most advanced mobile OS. Just take a look at Android, with some really innovative approaches towards UI.

The new software allows 36 iPhone carriers and 23 iPad carriers around the world to provide access to the faster LTE networks offered in many locations.

Since when is this worthy of news? So their previous software did not work properly, now they finally fixed it and launch it with big fanfare?

“with Apple-designed cartography, turn-by-turn navigation and Flyover view.”

Apple users, don't worry, Goggle Maps will still be available, so you can safely ignore this nightmarish program.. BTW, is Berlin still in Antarctica, or did they finally bothered to move it?

Zichi, the surface pro comes with a stylus as well that is pinpoint accurate and ideal for using as a graphics tablet better than any iDevice. 128Gb if disk space with Windows 8 which is ~20Gb when I installed it on my laptop which if I remember rightly is about the same as the bloatware as you put it known as OS X which is what you are comparing it with as it is a full blown machine not cut down like an IOS device. Also it has a Micro SD card slot in the back so another 64Gb of storage there, wireless so you can use your 500Gb wireless HD, USB so you can use ANY peripheral you want as well as Bluetooth, can be joined to a corporate network domain meaning it can be used as a business tool. Full blown i5 processor so very capable when it needs horsepower. You can't compare it to an iPad its comparing a phone with a big screen to a full blown laptop that has been shrunk!

All of the corporate enterprises I know are desperate for it to come out so they can finally deploy tablets that can leverage the investment in server hardware they have spent over the years (because like it or not most devices use Windows servers to consume the content even your beloved iPad), our clients also like the HP Envy but it doesn't have the horsepower of the Surface Pro though.

I have used the Surface RT for a month and it was really good, the keyboard was fine for short duration typing but the laptop keyboard for it was better but I got far more done on it than I ever did when I tried an iPad probably helped having full blown office. Ultimately I still prefer my laptop though!!

Anyway I am back to Ubuntu! I don't use either brands but you seem to like to bring the Surface up at every opportunity on every article I see and then slam it so it was time to put straight some of the above.

No, nobody actually believes it, only thing they are accused of is preventing other web browsers on their platform (by the EU). Guess what, iOS only allows safari clones on their system, the entire rendering backend is done by Apple and only apple, and no secondary browsers can be made the default!

See what Apple are capable of without resorting to criminal practices? Incredible!

Blackmail, threat of frivolous litigation, forced contracts? Those things have been outlawed since the late 1800s, yet Apple employed them for apparently little to no actual gain.

Apple's new OS is boss.

Broken Obsolete Super-Slow ? Or Bloated Old Slug Slime? Just check out the "improvements", which are actually just supposed to get the software up to average market specs in connectivity and reliability. Nothing innovative in the patch, not even minor tweaks that other OSes haven't had for a while already.

are you aware that this upgrade is 6.1?

Are you aware that OSX has been using minor revision numbers to signify "significant" updates? Software companies typically reserve major numbers for very large steps, and minor for lesser but still large steps. This is an incremental upgrade, no more significant than 6.0.2.

Unlike a ton of competitors, icrap, due to iOS restrictions, doesn't currently support pen type digitizers natively, nor will it ever be likely to do so considering Apple's closed system. The only thing you can do is use bluetooth and estimation to approximate what a digitizer is supposed to be like, but far slower and downright glitchy. Anyone that actually wants to do creative work would get a Wacom pad/monitor, since that's the industry standard.

Yep, nearly 230k. Oh wait, there are zero sales figures out for MS Surfaces sales have been. Course when both the Surface RT and Surface Pro were announced at the same time, but the Surface Pro would be released later, it doesn't surprise anyone that RT sales would be lower. Ppl will wait for the Pro.

I expect the Surface RT to fail, while the Surface Pro will shine. There's still almost 2 weeks left until the Surface Pro releases.

I'm rocking my Win 8 Enterprise tablet and it does everything I want, cause nothing Apple makes will.

300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history

It was closer to 100 million until google maps, and they only have about 400 million semi-active devices, where most of the remaining ones aren't able to upgrade to ios6 anyway.
