Apple's iPod Nano to come with video camera

Apple announced on Wednesday that it was adding a video camera to its iPod Nano and cutting prices of its wildly popular music players.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs unveiled the video camera-equipped iPod Nano at an Apple media event here during which he made a much-anticipated appearance on stage.

Jobs said the new iPod Nano, Apple's best-selling iPod with more than 100 million units sold, would now include a video camera, an FM radio, a pedometer and a microphone and speaker.

"You can watch your video on the Nano or sync it back to your computer," he said. "With one click you can send it to YouTube."

"So, pretty amazing to always have a video camera of that quality in your pocket, built right into your Nano," Jobs said.

He said there would be two models -- an eight gigabyte version for $149 and a 16 GB model for $179.

The video-equipped iPod was the product highlight of the Apple event dominated by Jobs' first public appearance since October 2008.

Jobs, 54, went on medical leave in January and returned to work in June following a liver transplant.

Apple also announced it was cutting the prices on various iPods models with the price of an 8GB iPod Touch, for example, dropping to $199 from $249.

That sounds really cool, but... why? I love gadgets as much as the next person, but everything I own has a camera these days, goodness.

Why do I see more people getting busted for upskirt pics and videos in the near future? "Really officer! I was just downloading some tunes!"

It's too bad they don't make the iPhone in this form factor -- that would be fantastic for those of us who want to listen to music and maybe take a photo or two, but have little use for all the applications and want to shed the bulk.

That is a stupid statement. What will they do? Strap their nano on to their shoes?

Hardly necessary. With dimensions of 3.6"x1.5" (90.7mm x 30.7mm) this would be easily concealable in the palm of the hand. Couple of spring loaded attachments and you could get it to automatically retract up your sleeve to disappear if anyone gets suspicious. Simply refuse to be searched when questioned and away you go.

Why am I thinking of these things....

At any rate, NuckinFutz is probably right. There will be a lot more upskirt videos available.

I guess iPods will again outsell the Walkman. The new offerings look pretty good. Makes me want to buy one of each! Now if I only had some money...

Looks good. I love my i-pod.

Again, the sound out of these INanos is awful. Apple doesn't learn? Add a decent sound chipset, and decent headset, not a camera!

adding lots of new features may be good ... but isn't the iPod gradually becoming 'un-iPodish'? it seems to be losing the qualities that made up the iPod. whether one likes it is up to each individual, but i think they're gradually transforming the iPod into some other gadget ...

The screen is twice as big as the persons thumb, how are you going to watch anything on that?

great, so they tell this NOW

They do that every year, just like they have the big press conference every Sept. What you buy today will be cheaper next Sept.
