The report came amid heated competition from rivals such as Samsung, whose flagship smartphone the Galaxy S III uses a 4.8-inch (12.2-centimeter) screen that is thinner than the current iPhone.

There are many many phones much more thinner that the iphone.

I don't know if "thinner" means that it's better. My parameter is one, and only one: do I feel safe when I enter my credit card number in this or that OS? Answer: there's only one OS that is secure enough.

@LostinNagoya,

The new technology will also boost displayed image quality, and help Apple cut costs

Because, you know, Apple was running such a fine cost margin on their iPhones (supposedly the highest in the industry, by a long shot). I guarantee those cost savings wont be passed on to their customers.

iOS, of course.

@originalusername: That is guaranteed, when you buy apple you pay for it.

The new technology will also boost displayed image quality

But Apple claim that the existing retina display's pixels are too small for the eye to distinguish, so how can they improve the image quality any more?

That makes a separate touch-screen layer unnecessary and reduces the screen thickness by about half a millimeter, Dow Jones quoted DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase as saying.

It is nothing related to pixels, but to opacity: less glass layers mean more sharpness.

Does that mean now all the apps are going to be available in two formats, normal and wide?

What may be needed is improved readability of the screen outside in daylight.

Iphone sucks long live the Galaxy S3

While I always appreciate new technology, is 1/2 mm difference in phone size thickness really newsworthy? How many people would even be able to notice the difference?

They are finally going 16/9. Welcome to the 21st century apple, even my 6 year old phone had that.

Now Samsung can sue apple for violating it's design, since samsung has 16/9 screens on sleek phones.
