What we know about e-cigarettes is based on science, and analyses of the ingredients since the devices have been used less than 10 years. So we don't have too much empirical evidence of the longer term effect of e-cigarettes. But in terms of the short term effect they appear to be safer then regular cigarettes. Although they are not safe or healthy in absolute terms it is a lot safer than regular cigarettes. In the end they have the ability to save your life and should receive more support than they deserve.

From what I have read, any harm that these cause is likely to be very minimal indeed and the second hand risks zero.

The health risks of walking down a a road with a traffic jam far outweigh the risks of vaping.

I vape and have been able to stay away from cigarettes ever since I started vaping. I don't stink like cigs or even have that nasty cough at night when I sleep so YES I say Vaping is more healthier that smoking a regular cigarette. I don't know why you would wanna modify the E-cig so that i creates more smoke that it does but I guess some people like more smoke than others. I wish that this would catch more in Japan so I don't have to go to izakaya's and come home smelling like an ash tray.

I can never understand why pro e-cig posts get voted down (here and elsewhere online)

What gives?

Legalized drug addiction is never going to get a thumb-up by me. Cigarettes - whether paper or electronic - are merely vectors to deliver the addictive drug nicotine into the bloodstreams of people too weak-minded to think for themselves. If you ask a smoker what on Earth would cause them to become addicted to a drug ON PURPOSE, you'll get some lame response like, "It's a cool thing to do" or "Everyone else was doing it". Alternatively, you'll get the immensely amusing, "I'm not addicted, I can quit at any time! But for now can I borrow $6 to go buy a pack of cigarettes?" The herd mentality is simply astounding - if only due to the fact that these weak-minded fools don't even SEE it for what it is. Some will even tell you that their decision to become addicted to nicotine "reflects their INDIVIDUALITY", believe it or not! All you smokers (of WHATEVER type of nicotine delivery system you use) stand up and repeat after me: "MOOOOooooooo". Now chew your cud. Thaaat's a good bovine!

The real issue is tax revenue. States would lose out on tobacco tax revenue. When they forced more fuel efficient cars o people in the US the revenue from the gas tax started to go down because we were driving more but using less gas causing a decrease in revenue. Smokers now have an option to smoke but states will lose the sales taxes from tobacco.

Follow the money and you will see who is behind the anti e-cigs.

@fadamor

So the opposition is down to pontificating.

Gotcha.

Actually E-Cigarettes are used in China since more than 10 Years, (see Historical Timeline) i started to use them since the Explosions in F'Shima.

I was a very heavy Smoker (Peace 24mg/ 20 Cigarettes a Day) and had serious Side Effects by the Tar, all this is gone.

Since 3/11 i smoked 5 Cigarettes only, for me to Vaporize is pure "Harm Reduction"!

Actually i use ca. 5ml with 16mg of Nicotine/ Day (80mg/ Day)

I see potential Danger for Kids because the Liquid is lethal when consumed per-oral.

Yes, we need a Safty-Regulation for the Mass-Market but we do not need Taxes!

There should definitely be regulation. No sales of e-cigs or fluid to anyone under 18, taxes on fluid equivalent to the current tax on cigarettes. Full disclosure of all ingredients in fluid. Standardization of the reported level of nicotine in fluid, much as there's a government standard for calculating a car's gas mileage, etc. They have to get a handle on this now, rather than waiting 4 years for scientific study. Use that data when it's available, but don't let this get out of control in the meantime.

I smoked a pack a day for 32 years. I got an e-cigarette and was done with real cigarettes in 4 days. I used the e-cig for 5 months and then quit using it. I've been nicotine free for two and a half years now, and I have no cravings at all. So I'll defend the use of e-cigs as a smoking cessation aid until I'm blue in the face. It won't work for everyone, but it will work for some. As for people who don't smoke and buy e-cigs..... well, that's just stupid. Just as bad as buying cigarettes for the first time. (Like I did, 35 years ago.)

JohnBecker: Great post! Gave me hope.

@Fandango: ....and the beer/whiskey/cocktail

Just as I suspected. That cloud exhaled into the air we all breath is NOT coming up as "pure water", which in my book means it may as well be regarded as NOT pure and as dangerous. I hope this is the last gasp of the villainous tobacco industry. Too bad people are so willing to engage in this, as every smoker shares their stupid habit with every bystander and person unlucky enough to follow them down the street.

@patricia yarrow

Where are you getting this "pure water" thing from? I've never heard anyone make that claim before.

The Dutch have recently developed an electronic joint which looks identical and works in a similar way. It is unclear whether or not these devices will be legal in many countries in Europe. Nevertheless, hopefully they will look into health implications for these as well. Here is the link to the article and video: http://dailym.ai/1px3IfB

You have a bit of thing about vaping. Just as an experiment, which would you prefer - I put you in a small garage an offer you a choice - a car with its engine running or an e-cig vaping? I think you prefer the latter, because the former will almost certainly kill you and the latter do no harm, as far as we know

Yet put you into a normal street, the person vaping up a head is suddenly an apparent threat to your life, when in reality the cars driving up and down are actually the ones pouring dangerous fumes, thousands and thousands of times more deadly.
