I know two engineers who have left their industry to work on CCS. They both think it's a game changer because the encumbents fossil companies have so much drilling data that supports carbon storing, and at many times cheaper than current price of carbon credits. AND it's safe and complementary with other extraction activities.

I'm waiting for the investment bankers to wage a media campaign against CCS any day now.

I think it is cheaper to plant trees to catch carbon naturally.

CCS is cheapest, most scalabke, even based on today's immature technology. Next cheapest is NOT cutting down trees (carbon sink), planting trees is way way down on the list.

From superficial explanations I have seen this is not an effective tool, counting all the direct and indirect energy costs it ends up producing more CO2 than what it can trap unless it uses very expensive clean energy, but then it would be better to replace the CO2 producing methods with this clean energy on the first place.

IMO, carbon capture is too expensive at this time to be practical, but with more research and experimentation, it may become practical.

As for trees, I love 'em, and I think planting more of them is a wonderful idea, but I think I read that at this point in our trend toward global warming we couldn't possibly plant enough trees to soak up all the carbon that we have put into the atmosphere. Besides which, much of the land that is practical for forestry is currently being used to plant crops that we need to feed the out of control population explosion.

Again IMO, there is no way around the conclusion that we have to make a drastic cut in the amount of carbon that we keep putting into the atmosphere, and then hope that the planet is able to self-correct enough to prevent a global warming feedback loop that we are powerless to control.
