what is the application of this technology other than warfare and criminal acts?

there will always be a way to detect things, if not by visual, then audio (sonar), if not, then by smell, etc etc.

Also, I assume most of these cloaking technolgies can be defeated by using at least two cameras or sensors, and comparing the data.

I like their one dimensional approach...make it so small you can't see it...

I believe these German researchers have stolen it from the Romulans.

Science now needs to consider all implications of new technology before performing research? I don't think so.

Cloak infrared eh?

Two uses off the bat.

1) Allows nuclear warheads to launch undetected because you would not see the infrared signature of the rocket that the satellites are looking for, thus allowing any state with nukes a First Strike.

2) Mosquitoes/flies seek infrared so might make good malaria protection.

Which one do you think humans will pick?

Oh and kiss all security cameras in all the world goodbye.

I mean, if you wanted the sneak a chocolate bar from the cafeteria guys, just ask, you don't have to ruin all human civilization over it.

If they give AC 2 or lower and need a saving throw of 19 for visiblity, I will pay 1300 gp for one.
