Up until a couple of weeks ago there was little interest in Congress in regulating them but now it seems something from her subcommittee may go to a vote soon. It is Treasury Department officials such as Nellie Liang who are now walking back earlier comments recommending a light touch on cryptocurrencies

Crypto isn't run by anyone. That's the whole point of the decentralization of the blockchain - no one can control it.

You are speaking of the exchanges, which are how most people interact with cryptocurrencies, but are not required, they are just a point of convenience. Of course, the convenience can result in collapses like this one, when they are run by people in over their heads.
