NTT DoCoMo on Tuesday unveiled its 2011 winter — 2012 spring product lineup of 24 models for launch in or after November, including 14 smartphones, the largest and most diverse collection ever released by DoCoMo.

The new smartphone lineup meets a broad range of needs for users in Japan, including smartphones for DoCoMo's extra-high-speed next-generation LTE service, Xi, for mobile data communication at up to 75 Mbps; and smartphones equipped for mobile-wallet (Osaifu-Keitai), infrared-based data exchange, one-seg mobile TV and tethering.

Enhanced features for the smartphones include dual-core CPUs, large HD-quality liquid crystal screens and high-spec cameras.

All smartphones are equipped for Area Mai transmissions of earthquake early warnings from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

DoCoMo also announced the mid-November launches of two all-new services for smartphones, “dmenu” and “dmarket.” The dmenu portal site will provide a wide range of apps and other content from diverse providers, as well as enriched versions of DoCoMo’s popular i-mode content, optimized for easy-to-use smartphone interfaces.

The new dmarket content store will offer a wealth of other content, including movies, music, e-books and Android™ applications. DoCoMo’s new smartphones also will have access to a variety of other DoCoMo services, such as i-concier for push-based concierge-like personal assistance.

The new models include 8 sophisticated feature phones, all compatible with the i-mode mobile Internet platform. The lineup boasts a distinctive collaboration model and several models equipped for convenient wireless charging. All models are compatible with “docomo Palette UI” for easy sorting, searching and managing of stored content.

DoCoMo has reorganized its lineup into five categories: docomo with series and docomo NEXT series for smartphones, docomo Tablet category for tablets, and docomo STYLE series and Raku-Raku PHONE series for feature phones.

All with limited cell tower coverage! Can you hear me now?

DoCoMo and AU have by far the better coverage in Kanto AND Kansai and still have over 70% of the market between them. Does anybody see that changing, especially with AU offering the iPhone? Those that have used Xi will know how quick it is in the cities. I use a Xi box with my iPad and its like using home broadband - miles better than using a iPad connected to the 3G Softbank Network.

You have Docomo confused with crappy Softbank.

Xi is great but still expensive. This time not many good models. Why dont Docomo not coming with data plans near 4k.and i dont know why they charge extra ISP (315~525) charges for mobiles.

Damn I hate those buggy Android phones. And those over-sized screens like Samsucks Galaxy. I thought the whole point of a phone was to be able to fit it snugly in your pocket not by bigger clothes to accomodate it. And it's difficult to access anything on those screens at 4 inches plus with one thumb. Kind of defeats the purpose of a 'mobile' phone - should call them mini tablets.

In terms of cellular reception, yes Docomo is better but a recent test has shown that download speeds are comparable across the board and Softbank holds its own in that department.

4 to 4.5 inches- is fine unless you have kid sized hands. Android gives you the option of screen sizes - 3.3 from the xperia ray to 4.65 of the upcoming nexus. You get options! I cant believe that iphone is still sticking with the piddly 3.5 only, no options, that's it, one size does not fit all. Great phone but limited.. Samsung Galaxy nexus is an an amazing phone, it was just unveiled today. Cant wait to get one on docomo and be able to get 4 bars everywhere on it.

Nice, more Android phones for Docomo, I might have to go back... but not for the Samsung... ugh. I'll wait for a new HTC if they get one.

I guess Docomo gave up on Blackberry and they won't carry the iPhone. Sucks for sure!

DoCoMo won't bother with the iphone until they are allowed to modifty it to accept docomo.ne.jp mail and it has a mobile wallet. When number portability was introduced here nobody cared. The Japanese want to keep their email addresses, its all they care about- they don't care about their number. 50% of Japanese who own an iphone have continued to keep their old DoCoMo or AU phone also purely for the mail address. DoCoMo have not given up on the Blackberry - the 9900 will be released here early next year.

They carry several BlackBerry models including a new one. But with so many nice Android offerings, why would you want one?

I love how the iPhone is shaking up the brain-dead Japanese cell phone market. It's quite reassuring to see so many iPhones being used in Japan, despite no "wallet", "one-seg", and other meaningless stuff nobody really needs.

er..the 'Wallet' is extremely popular and incredibly useful, have you actually used it? Please see my comment above about how manby Japanese keep another phone along with their iphone.

Western cellulars are far behind japanese ones.
