Docomo Xi LTE service subscribers top 2 million

NTT Docomo Inc said Friday today that subscribers to Xi (pronounced “crossy”), the company’s extra-high-speed LTE mobile service offering a maximum downlink of 75 Mbps, surpassed two million on March 18.

Xi launched on Dec 24, 2010 and reached one million subscribers one year later on Dec 25, 2011. Since then, subscriptions have doubled to two million in just three months, propelled by the introduction of the first Xi-compatible smartphones in November 2011.

Docomo said the number of subscribers is expected to grow as it continues to introduce additional Xi-compatible smartphones, tablets and data-communication devices and mobile Wi-Fi routers, as well as beneficial services, such as Xi Talk 24, which enables free, unlimited voice calls between Docomo users of Xi-compatible smartphones.

Im thinking about getting an LTE phone. Is Xi really that much better over 3G? I think their Xi plan costs 500 yen more per month. Lot of people signed up so Im thinking it cant be slow.

Yes, it's that much better, incomparable. I have an LTE phone and a mi-fi router. Both very quick.

As LTE technology is based on full-internet protocol based technology, we can get clear voice, speedy internet and completely free conversation through the phone. I believe that the number of subscribers should be multiplied by a few thousand shortly. In addition, new Ipad is having LTE technology on board, which appears to be attractive for users who want to enjoy movie, gaming and etc.

@sasakama: Yes - but Apple have misadvertised the new ipad as being compatible with a Japanese LTE metwork...which is NOT,
