Not it just creating a techies, with no actual skill just a style.

Why is it also emphasized that something needs programming skills or that programming is something that is done only by a few specialists? That is completely wrong. Everyone is a programmer in daily life and even toddlers and kindergarten children follow own programs. For example waking and getting up after the alarm clock rings, putting on clothes and then leaving home, that's already a sequential program. Or can anyone leave home before putting on clothes and getting up from bed? I am sure that's very difficult, not to follow this program. Or another example is using a washing machine. That's a subroutine program almost everyone uses, where you only put in dirty clothes and get as output clean clothes, but it's not important to know what the subroutine program inside the washing machine does. And so on, the whole life is programming.

Can a complete tech novice create a website using everyday language on ChatGPT

All it takes to create a website is basic knowledge of HTML, CSS and Javascript. A functioning webpage can be created with HTML only.

All this reliance on AI will only make people lazier.

What's wrong with using tools to make work easier? Driving a car instead of walking is not laziness. Using a computer instead of pen and paper is not laziness. Using washing machine instead of hands is not laziness.

Nothing is easier than HTML as far as coding is concerned. Any tech novice can learn it with a bit of effort.

Driving a car instead of walking is not laziness. Using a computer instead of pen and paper is not laziness. Using washing machine instead of hands is not laziness.

Wrong analogies. This is not about driving a car but about expecting to be driven around in self driven vehicles. Which is fine if you have years of experience of driving, but I don't recommend that people give up learning to drive itself. Which is what these generative AI models are leading us to.

Next people will say that they don't even want to make the effort of typing on their devices, instead give us a speech translator. Oh wait, we already have such translators available.

I have been building my website since about 1996 using HTML codes which have changed greatly has time progressed. I code in English and Japanese. The problem with HTML code is it easy to make mistakes even with the smallest piece. I verify my code for correct HTML, link checks, and responsive design to meet the many types of devices now used. Computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones.

It is time-consuming and often boring work. But the final results are always pleasing.

If AI could code the HTML pages for me I would go with that.

Do you still use notepad or use an IDE? An IDE like VS Code makes life easier, and I would still prefer to do things myself using an IDE over trusting AI to do it for me.

There are frameworks for making responsive web pages, and yes, it can be a bit of effort to learn a new framework as opposed to basic HTML. It would be easier to build a complex website using an AI than learning a new framework and then finding out that what you built works well on laptops, browsers but fails on mobile apps.

But I would still prefer to understand what an AI did for me as opposed to depending totally on AI where I have absolutely no clue whats going on.

I tried a few web pages using AI, but they were not 100% correct. Still, I shall test with it.

The coding must be great if the answer is "..and it mostly works." Debugging will be fun because of prompt engineering. Asking AI to debug the bad code it generated in the hope it will create a cleaner code. The developer will lose the ability to code and fully depend on AI. Fantastic!

If I ask a programmer to make me a program does that make me a programmer?

Losing the ability to code is fantastic?

You're a genius I guess
