Twitter’s employees have been expecting layoffs since Musk took the helm.

https://www.grid.news/story/technology/2022/04/30/elon-musk-hates-the-government-his-companies-love-it/

Neo-liberals and the right are always saying giving taxcuts and subsidies to the "job creators" will create jobs?

Elon Musk, unfortunately, is beginning to resemble a character from his inspirational text, Iain Banks The Culture series, Joiler Veppers, an uber-capitalist.

Not the anarcho-libertarian-socialist heroes of Banks' texts.

Whatever you think of Musk, or his politics, the most crucial element of a any social media business that relies on a significate proportion of its revenue from advertising Brand recognition, trust, integrity.

Whatever the reasoning behind the alleged layoffs, importance is timing, plus due diligence on what these people do or who they are and without any regards to the law.

Musk has astonishingly/single handedly, without fear, set about trashing the twitter brand within a week/s of his purchasing the company.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Big companies including General Motors, REI, General Mills and Audi have all paused ads on Twitter due to questions about how it will operate under Musk. Volkswagen Group said it is recommending its brands, which include Skoda, Seat, Cupra, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche and Ducati, pause paid activities until Twitter issues revised brand safety guidelines.

Twitter should publish a list of advertisers who have ceased so we the consumers know a list of companies that supports suppression and is anti-freedom of speech. Not that I'd ever be a GM customer, or VW's.

Looks like Twitter will become another bullhorn for nuts.

Looks like Twitter will become another bullhorn for nuts.

How so? It was a bullhorn for multinational corporations before Musk. Now, at least there's no more gag.

Being able to express, let off steam is what strengthen democracy, at least that's what we used to say to communist despots.

But let's say Twitter was able to avoid Musk, and continue to gag. Who decides what to gag? A corporation and its advertisers. Do people seriously want that? Corporations that can dictate to a president with ultimate political power?

You mean like a blacklist? I thought blacklisting corporations and public entities was cancel culture Marxism?

Good! Trimming the excess fat!

Ahh, that sounds like cancel culture. That's not very openminded.

How so? It was a bullhorn for multinational corporations before Musk. Now, at least there's no more gag.

Yes, I imagine corporations will really love seeing their ads posted on Twitter right in between a bunch of racial slurs.

Being able to express, let off steam is what strengthen democracy,

No. Spewing hate and racial slurs doesn't strengthen democracy.

But let's say Twitter was able to avoid Musk, and continue to gag. Who decides what to gag? A corporation and its advertisers. Do people seriously want that? Corporations that can dictate to a president with ultimate political power?

Yes, I'm perfectly happy to allow corporations the autonomy to ban racist speech, and those who peddle stolen election conspiracy theories. If you don't like it, then don't use their platform. Have you every thought about that?

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Sorry, Sh1mon, I don't know what "gag" means. Where I come from it means to throw up or feel like you will.

It is remarkable, that one man, Musk, can buy a company, some $44 billion?, then cause such damage in such a short space of time.

“The activist groups have been successful in causing a massive drop in Twitter advertising revenue, and we’ve done our absolute best to appease them and nothing is working,”

Every road leads to Musk, his ill-considered, rash, temerarious actions are responsible for the losses.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Investors should have been calling the bonkers bus as soon as they caught Musk approaching waving a sink.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Thousands were fired in America and UK. Some will receive pay until Feb. No news on Japanese Twitter employees. The many other countries with Twitter employees. The atmosphere in Twitter must be hell not knowing what is happening and who is next.

Musk carried a sink, he should be careful his Twitter ship does not sink.

Being locked out of the office and firing people by email is not respectful.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

Reports are that Musk fired 3700 staff, specialist developers, with a single Email.

A act completed by Musk in his first weeks as director.

Musk couldn't with all honesty know fully the importance or even function of these employees.

There is the danger now that Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, Apple etc will poach these staff.

I can't imagine the state of morale of the Twitter staff remaining.

Ahh, that sounds like cancel culture. That's not very openminded.

No, he’s stopping the left from canceling the right and everyone else they’re trying to silence or kick off because of their politics.

Yes, I imagine corporations will really love seeing their ads posted on Twitter right in between a bunch of racial slurs.

The left we’re doing int constantly towards the right and yet, not a word.

No. Spewing hate and racial slurs doesn't strengthen democracy.

So then why can the left stay on the plat form unopposed and to say vile, rude shameful partisan comments. Silencing one side doesn’t help democracy.

Yes, I'm perfectly happy to allow corporations the autonomy to ban racist speech, and those who peddle stolen election conspiracy theories. If you don't like it, then don't use their platform. Have you every thought about that?

Well, those days of one-sided lib think is over, now we can have fairness down the middle again.

The atmosphere in Twitter must be hell not knowing what is happening and who is next.

Well, they’ll find new jobs

Musk carried a sink, he should be careful his Twitter ship does not sink.

It won’t.

Being locked out of the office and firing people by email is not respectful.

What Twitter has done to thousands of conservatives, you’re not going to tears of sorrow, you’re going to hear the cry of joy from now on.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

You mean like a blacklist? I thought blacklisting corporations and public entities was cancel culture

Short answer - No, to be informed of a company's stance.

Cancel culture is someone else deciding for me whether a company's value matches or NOT matches mine. Vast difference, but sure one can always eloquently manipulate words to argue a point. Not what I'm trying to do here.

Put another say. Informed choices vs ex-twitter Agrawal's choices, eg how did he decide Kanye's value doesn't meet my value, without being informed about my value first. Current Twitter publishing a list is to inform me so I can make my own choice whether to support that company or not.

Back in the 70's only social media was a party line, when group of people talked to each other on the phone it can be profitable since everybody has unlimited telephone time Google 7O Party Line

Looks like Twitter will become another bullhorn for nuts

It already has plenty of nuts on it.

Musk may open up Twitter to further deluges of trash but there is plenty there already.

I wish people would stop equating ‘conservatives’ with trashmongers. There are decent, sane conservatives out there not gibbering about conspiracy theories and the like. They dislike these clowns.

Will there still be enough Twitter employees left to be able to moderate it during next week's midterm elections? Whole teams have been dismissed. The remaining employees do not know what the future is.

In many cases, the dismissal of employees is covered by laws.

In the UK, monthly paid employees are required one month's notice before dismal. The dismal can be instant but the employee still receives one month's pay.

A number of UK Twitter employees have been dismissed and both UK HQs are in lockouts.

In the US "at-will" employees are not required to be given notice but the majority of Twitter employees have contracts so the terms of dismissal will be in the contract.

San Francisco District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey said in a press release that Twitter had filed a notice with city officials Friday informing them that the company would lay off 784 employees at its San Francisco offices beginning Jan. 4, 2023.

The speed and size of the cuts also opened Musk and Twitter to lawsuits. At least one was filed Thursday in San Francisco alleging Twitter has violated federal law by not providing fired employees the required notice.

The federal Warn Act requires companies who plan to lay off at least 50 workers at one site to give those employees 60 days’ notice, and to notify state and local representatives. It applies to companies with 100 or more full-time employees and allows only a handful of exceptions: natural disaster, unforeseeable business circumstances or a failing business.

None of those would seem to apply in Twitter’s case.

The penalties for violation can result in the employer paying two months of severance out to affected employees.

In Japan, if an employer wishes to dismiss an employee, the employer must give the employee at least 30 days' notice.

Twitter lost 90% of ad revenue, 50% of their work force, and took on multiple lawsuits in less than 1 week under Musk. Not to mention all existing employees hate him. And on top of all that, he’s attacking advertisers, his only source of income.

That is what you call a failed leader.

Trump is losing his Truth Social and it is not paying its bills. Trump launched it as a rival to Twitter but it never really got going. Maybe, Musk can offer him a job.

From $1.3 billion to... zero. Truth Social, the social network launched by Donald Trump after his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, was to be eventually acquired by an investment fund that had raised 1.3 billion dollars for this purpose, but the project now seems practically doomed.

Then take it to court, good luck

I just don’t feel anything for these people.

were your Tweets never deleted? Was your Twitter account never banned?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Personally I don’t want other people managing my disinformation for me. I like to read what Joe Biden and Donald Trump are saying, and guess what, I can assess what they are saying without needing someone else to protect me from their lies and falsehoods.

How can someone make judgments about 7,500 Twitter employees in more than 20 different countries? Claiming they are all left-wing.

6753 Twitter employees

Why are liberals so outraged. Judging by their salaries, they will all be ok. Best of luck to them!

Twitter ... source of reliable information

Haha, seriously?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

with so many different employees in so many different countries and cultures how do you know they all fit into your definition of "liberals"?

Japan has the second largest members but I doubt the employees fit into your definitions.

I would say the majority overwhelmingly. I’m sure you don’t have conservatives, Republicans or Trump supporters working there.

Not sure, anyway, best of luck to them. I mean that sincerely

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

What did they say then? And is this even a true story? Were there tweets that were deleted by the pro Hillary mods? What are some specifics about these deleted tweets? And who would care about these probably imaginary deleted tweets anyway?

Why won't Elon go after TikTok since according to some it's being used by the Chinese to spy on Americans? Twitter is nothing compared to TikTok and some say after Elon is finished with it Twitter will go the way of Myspace and Friendster. It's also funny when Elon saying private companies not advertising on Twitter is a violation of free speech. That is idiotic and the real situation is Elon bought 44 billion dollars worth of garbage. Companies can advertise what they want. That's free trade.

You seem unable to get out of your bubble that Twitter is not only just an American site. There are more non-American members than American ones.

You have no idea about all the different employees just trying to make it fit into your narrative.

Why did you even keep a Twitter account?

I stopped more than 10 years ago.

You said you don't care about the employees then you say you care? Confusing.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Twitter has just about the slowest growth for social media and now TikTok is fastest. The reason why Trump people like Elon is because Elon likes Trump and he will let Trump back on Twitter. But where does that leave TrumpBook? Also once Trump starts his campaign of hate it will make advertisers flee (even more). There is indication that Elon will make Twitter die like a squished cockroach and even die a worse death than Friendster.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

You seem unable to get out of your bubble that Twitter is not only just an American site.

Twitter is an American company founded by an American and sold to another American that hires employees from America predominantly and overseas as well. Yes, I understand.

There are more non-American members than American ones.

Ok

I’m m sure I do

Why did you even keep a Twitter account?

Because I knew this day would come.

What are the specifics of those deleted tweets? Did that actually happen? Is that a real story? What is Elon makes Twitter go the way of Friendster? What social media will you use next? How about TikTok?

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March 2006 and launched in July of that year. With its HQ in SF.

Why would a right-wing conservative join Twitter when they have posted so many criticisms about left-wing media and social networks? Even all the Silicon tech companies.

In 2019, Dorsey contributed financially to the campaigns of Democratic 2020 presidential candidates Tulsi Gabbard and Andrew Yang.

In 2020, he donated $15 million to 29 mayors pursuing the piloting of guaranteed basic income programs in the United State

Trump needed you on his Truth Social, now too late for that one.

That’s going to change. The layoffs will give a sense to these people that this is seriously for real. Again, they’ll be fine.

Probably half of the hardcore leftists will do or say something to violate the terms of their severance.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Trump hates Musk and won't be returning.

Only 23% of Americans use Twitter.

You have no clue what either of these men think or if Trump reached out to him, zero. Trump has said a lot of things and then changed his mind, this is no different, in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he joined just for the sole reason to just make the lefts head explode, it’s worth it, I’d pay big money to see that.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Probably half of the hardcore leftists will do or say something to violate the terms of their severance.

Who are these people? "Leftists" are smarter about money than Trump people in general. Are these fired Twitter people who vote Hillary?

Maybe, because they have that right?

When the TrumpKeepers and KKK join twitter with all their Hillary-hate will advertisers stay?

I know, it’s in The US

TikTok? Twitter vs. Ticktock is like a lizard vs. Godzilla. Why aren't Trump people caring about TikTok so much? Should Elon buy Tictok?
